He always refereed to being in the Peckerwood army. Didn't know what it was until I was older. Peckerwood is what richer folks called poor people back then. Also, referred to them as rednecks, trash, etc. 'Bout anyone lower in class than the rich folk with indoor plumbing. He was a poor sod buster when he volunteered.
