Random, Thoughts, X,XXIV

Had my first actual fire/emergency last night, right at quitting time. The Vol fan saved the plant, and day!😆 Seriously, it was getting bad, got into the drop ceiling. I emptied 2 fire extinguishers, got it out before the fire department got there. They double checked, and everything was out. I got worried for a minute, thankfully it went out.

In the 1960s, the Atlanta TV market included VHF affiliates of the big 3 (ABC, CBS, NBC) and a few independent UHF stations. During the heyday of broadcast TV, UHF was even more frustrating to tune in a clear image.

By the 1990s, cable ruled, and VHF signal strength wasn’t as important as it had been, but was a matter of prestige for the big three. So, it was a bit humbling for CBS when the Atlanta market VHF channel 5 switched to Fox. CBS was relegated to UHF channel 46.

This year, Gray Media, the owners of several local stations in regional markets will switch CBS from channel 46 to channel 69. Oh, the humanity!

In 1996, the Olympics were in Atlanta, and, of course, I went. Throughout the previous year, I had been corresponding with Goodyear about how to enhance the effectiveness of blimp tours. It was an amicable interaction. When I asked to ride on a blimp during the Olympics, I was surprised at how accommodating they were willing to be. However, they would only offer me an opportunity conflicting with my dearly purchased track & field tickets. I made my case for a different date & time, but to no avail. To date, I’ve never flown in a blimp.

I was first stung by Asian needle ants at my mother’s former home on the Satilla River delta a few years ago. I was in the front yard near the wisteria growing up a lamp post when I felt the stings. Looking down, I saw tiny black ants. These ants have been recognized in the US since the 1930s. They’re in the news these days because their stings may cause anaphylactic shock.
