I hooked a 10 footer once in the side so he couldn't bite through the line. Almost got him to the boat and then the thing took off and broke the line. Pretty awesome when you could actually see the shark near the top of the water.

I used steel leaders lines to prevent that. Nothing gets your adrenaline flowing like a shark thrashing around in your boat and you throw a towel over it and jump on it. Wrestle his head still then use pliers to get the hook out. Those suckers are strong and after two or three I was worn out.
