Never understood why they change the set up for the finals.

Because the Finals are between the East and West, so they want less travel.

Specifically, I believe it was set up to minimize travel between Boston and LA, back when that was nearly always the Finals matchup. That's a long way to travel 5 times in one series.

Yeah, it's very antiquated. It harks back to when travel was a much bigger issue for the teams.
