Ramifications of all this fallout

Florida fires Zook, hires Urban Meyer. Program turns around and wins 2 titles.

Florida, Meyer leaves program in shambles, Muschamp is starting to turn their program around.

Alabama, 97-2006, 3 different coaches, Shula finally fired, they bring in Saban, goes 12-0 in 2nd year

Tennessee, fires Fulmer, Hammy brings in Kiffin then Dooley. 4 years later we are still wallowing in mediocrity. Sooner or later we have to admit to ourselves that the level of coaching is an issue.

Dooley = Mike Shula light

You had me until "Shula light". Shula won 10 games. Dooley is yet to win more than he has lost at UT much less 10. I could roll with Wannabe Anemic Shula.

As I have read and witnessed over that last several days since the Florida loss, I see fans calling for CDD to be fired and for Tyler Bray to be benched, what concerns me as a lifelong Tennessee fan is that taking these type of drastic actions would set our program back even farther than it already is. How can anyone say benching Tyler Bray is going to help us win more games this year, like it or not he is our best QB right now and provides us our best chance to win. Firing Coach Dooley means scrambling to hold on you our current recruit commitments and trying to convince other uncommitted recruits that our program is in a stable place and headed in the right direction. We all know that coaching turnover (rest assuredly staff turnover as well if Dooley is fired) causes a great deal of uncertainly with current players and potential recruits in any program. How is this good for Tennessee? Yes we have had some tough seasons the last few years, but CDD was given a program that was in shambles in terms of level of talent. I don’t think anyone can argue the fact he has improved our talent dramatically which is a huge accomplishment considering our previous losing seasons. He has brought back the commitment to our traditions and has put the program ahead of any one player or coach. We have to give this man time to right the ship. I am not saying that he should be given a pass, but In terms of where we were 3-5 years ago to know, we are a better team. Realistically, I think this was a 4-5 year project. If we don’t give CDD the time needed, I fear we will continue to tread the waters of mediocrity for the foreseeable future. Now IS NOT the time to make another change after just 3 years.
i completely ageee but COMON COMON DOOLEY JUST WIN ONE BIG GAME COMON

Folks here on VN have repeated the phrase "CDD has rebuilt the roster. We're a better, deeper team than when he arrived," so often that it seems many actually believe it.
But look at the record. In piling scorn on Philip Fulmer, posters here have said, "he left the cupboard bare." However, in 2009, when Fulmer was replaced by Lane Kiffin, Tennessee, a) lost by 10 to a #1 ranked Florida team in Gainesville (compare this to a 17-pt loss to #23 FL at Neyland last Saturday); b) pounded unranked UGA 45-19 at Neyland; c) came within a blocked FG of beating #1 Bama at Tuscaloosa; d) beat #21 USC 31-13 at home.
For this die-hard UT fan, Derek Dooley has accomplished one thing as HC. He's made me nostalgic for a man who could get his players to play as hard as did Lane Kiffin.

It was this type of thinking and panic that led to the Dooley hire in the first place. Bottom line is that Dooley has filled out the roster and has made improvements to the situation he took over; however he has yet to show the ability to beat teams with equal to greater talent in his tenure, or even stay competitive in games against our primary rivals. I am not saying we fire Dooley tomorrow, but if this two plus year trend continues this season we cannot base decisions on saving an average recruiting class. Hell, even a top 5 recruiting class shouldn't preclude doing what is best for Tennessee.

What improvements? :ermm:

Okay, I should have stopped at improving the roster situation. Of course we could include shower hygiene and mastery of orange dog / red dog theory as improvements; that would bolster things a bit.

I don't agree with the TB part, the game was put on his shoulders because the coaches panicked . Tn was running the ball pretty well. I can't put the whole game on TB, he wasn't giving up over 200 yds in the 2nd half. 20 points should have been enough to beat Fla. they only had 5 TDs coming into the game. Sal and his def. made Flas off. a lot better than they were.

You got it:salute:

I have came to the conclusion that this is the first time that most of the posters on here have had to live thru a down time in Tennessee Football.

I never thought Tyler Bray was the problem...he is a kid, and has great natural ability!!Also he is on a HUGE stage. I expect him to make his mistakes as he matures. NO I don't blame the team. I blame the coaching staff for not taking a breath and showing the confidence to the players that all is not lost when the game turned around. I know that when the coaches became AWESTRUCK at the gators performance the players could see it. When we left our game plan, that is what told the players it was time to panic... NO it is not the teams fault, it is the Coaching staff who is to blame for the loss. Should we get rid of Dooley? We will know after the GA, Miss State, Kentucky, Vandy, and Bammer games...I do not think he is the man for the job....stage is to big for him...I don't care who his dad is. Anyway we will know soon enough.

People need to get their facts straight.

CDD has NOT recruited 3 classes because his 1st recruiting class was KffScums class that CDD had less that 2 weeks to try and hold together and he did add some pretty good players of his own despite not being able to tell the recruits who our coaches would be.

CDD only has 2 recruiting classes of his own on campus and they're just Sophs and freshmen and alot of those kids are really good football players as is proven by how many freshmen ended up starting last year and this year.

It will be 2 more recruiting classes before the 1st CDD recruiting class are Seniors and we still do NOT have good Senior or Junior leadership.

Coaches can only coach and try to motivate 18 to 22 year old kids.

Junior and Senior leaders CAN get on the backs and call out every player on the team at practice and by going up and down the sidelines during a game but we don't see much, if any, of that taking place.

CDD is a bad coach...really???

That's not what nick saTan says and he kept CDD on his coaching staff for 7 YEARS when he could have hired anyone he wanted to hire and fired CDD in a second and CDD was the recruiting coordinator that helped put together the LSU team that won the National Championship.

People here love to call facts excuses just to make their point of view seem to have some credibility but it is a FACT that our program and player roster was horrid and 1 of the worst in college football when CDD took this task on.

We're only goinng into GAME 4 of year 3 and people scream to fire CDD which is totally ignorant for many reasons that have been stated here numerous times but people choose to ignore reality and facts.

Every smart person that does know college football knew that when CDD was hired this was a 4 to 5 year total rebuilding job before we could realistically even think about knocking heads with the best teams in the SEC.

Being patient is 1 of the hardest things in the world to do but being patient is exactly what we need to learn to do....Unless you want to start all over and set us back another 5 years.

VFL...GBO!!!

I never said 4-5 years. I would never agree to give someone 4-5 years to turn a program around unless they at least showed SOME signs of improvement such as winning ONE game against a ranked opponent. 3 years, yes, and for the record I don't think Dooley is going to be fired before the end of the season.

The absolute worst thing that could happen is for us to go 7-6, go to a bowl game and be forced to have him coach another year.

On Dooley, you have to fire a coach some time, so when is a good time? The day after letters of intent? Bray's attitude better change. Kids got a million dollar arm, but he's dumb as a box of rocks. He'd better learn to read D's and check off if he wants to make the big bucks.
