Just a rediculous statement, had he ever watched Alabama play football before? Bama's M.O. throughout their history has been a solid running game and a tough defense. That statement would have made sense last weekend coming from a 'Bama fan and relating them against UF, but from VT fans, it just makes no sense.

As Michael Scott says, "Who knows how words are formed?"

I can only speak from what I have experienced and this is no where close to being true. I have been to Lane twice, once several years ago when they were playing Rutgers (nothing memorable but it was when Rutgers sucked and it was a 12:00 start) and this year when they played UNC. Thursday night game, showed on ESPN, great weather, close conference game and I couldn't have been more disappointed. The entrance was pretty cool but the atmosphere was lacking. Never got very loud and the Key Play deal just got on my damn nerves.

VT's football atmosphere is extremely overrated IMO.

Neyland has been quieter over the past few seasons, but at it's loudest, there is no way Lane Stadium could ever touch it. The 2 loudest moments I can recall were the Wilhoit FG aginst UF in '04, and the UF game in '06 when Jonathan Wade ran the Chris Leak pass in for a TD which was eventually called back for roughing the passer (one of the biggest BS calls I have ever seen)

Travis Henry's entire drive down the field in the 4th quarter against Arkansas 1998 was the loudest I've ever heard/felt.

Not the point I was making. I'd say the atmosphere for the VT-UNC game was about equal to UT-USCe this year. Not very loud at all and since they had good weather, a close game, and a full house (UT had none of those things due to weather and the ass kicking) and I was disappointed in the noise. Lane Stadium had no reason to not be rocking that night.

Agreed. I was at the VT/Bama game (which, btw, heather dinich on espn just had the gall to write that that was a close game!) and one of VT's "market researchers" was next to me and was so giddy about the Enter Sandman theme/entrance and turned and asked, "Isn't our entrance awesome? Isn't it like ten times better than their's?" I literally laughed at him and said, "Are you serious? They're just different." And then he went on to brag about how they were lunch-pail while Bama was caviar or something lame like that- I'm sure my input was relegated as an outlier in their massive feedback database. They are extremely lame fans.

Their fans do seem to have some sort of a Napoleon complex. I have not encountered a fan base quite like theirs.

I hope Memphis doesn't start having a few decent seasons, because I could see them having the same sort of issues.

Virginia Tech- nothing but a SEC wannabe. The problem is that they are not competitive in a basketball conference so they have to dig for respect. They were small school until a one of the Alabama assistants, I think Jerry Claiborne went up there in the 1960's and introduced them to southern football. Otherwise they would still be in the William & Mary, James Madison, and Davidson leagues.

WOW, what a great tradition!

What exactly constitutes "a few decent seasons" at Tiger High? It would be funny more than anything to see a fanbase let a string of 7-5 or 6-6 seasons, and bowl appearances in the St. Petersburg, Armed Forces, and New Orleans Bowls go to their head.

Your program is heading nowhere but downhill.

They have definitely peaked as a program.

They have accomplished a lot for what they are, but the key to success in college football is recruiting, and there is no way they ever become successful in that. If a kid is a truly good player, and they're getting offers from SEC schools, USC, Texas, Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc, there is no chance they end up at Va Tech. Va Tech is located in the middle of a cow pasture, on top of a mountain, in the middle of nowhere. There is not really anything to do there. Their facilities are very mediocre.

On top of all that already going against them, if Virginia ever decides to stop managing their program like a bunch of idiots, they should be able to take over Va Tech's edge with the "under the radar" prospects in Virginia that Va Tech has built its program around (over the radar recruits in VA go out of state). Virginia has, in my opinion, a better game day atmosphere (not intimidating by any stretch, but nice, often compared to Ole Miss), a lot more money than Va Tech, and a much better location. I don't know much about their new head coach (Virginia's AD is a moron, so I'm not optimistic), but if he is at all decent look for the two roles to change soon.

Thank you... I could sit here and list 20 more... Most of articles that have Neyland listed near the top are SEC writers trying to pump up their own conference... Think about it this way, if Lane Stadium ranks near the top right now with 66K people in attendance, what would the sound levels be if our stadium held 100K like yours? Pound for pound, Lane Stadium is second to no one... If I had to rank the top 5 stadiums in the country, this would be it:

1) Tiger Stadium - LSU
2) Lane Stadium - VT
3) Tiger Stadium - Clemson
4) Auzten Stadium - Oregon
5) Beaver Stadium - Penn State

Tennessee would be somewhere between 6-15th...

You do realize that your first example was written by some random fan and the next two are the same thing, right...

Your list is also trying to pump up your own conference. You specifically said that NCAA fans don't think UT has a good atmosphere, which is completely ridiculous. All you have to do is look around to see that Neyland is on every list. Lane? Not so much. Have you ever been to a game in Neyland? How about those other stadiums? Just wondering what you are basing this top notch list off of.

Congratulations on your stadium being the best "pound for pound". I really doubt that is true in the first place. You know what though, alot of people say a smallmouth bass is the best fighting fish, pound for pound. But you know what? I'd rather catch a muskie.

You're really grasping for straws here.

I had no idea the rivals article was written by a fan of Virginia Tech football...

Meant that the next two are the same as each other, not the same as the first one...I had a smarta** reply typed up before I realized that my original post could be read two different ways.

Been to Lane Stadium.

Quiet place, even when you pulled the game out of your ass against Nebraska. I think your 50's vintage Cassell Coliseum is louder for basketball.

You actually need to pull the ear plugs out to hear the noise... Every stadium goes through it's rough years, Lane has been down since last year because of mediocre football... I know most of you will judge Hokie fans based on our attendance at the Dome for the bowl game, but I'm flat out telling you that the Vols will outnumber us 3-1... Hokie fans are just not that excited for this game... If we were going to play a mediocre team, we would have rather played Notre Dame and beat them to a pulp... It wont feel the same if we beat Tennessee... It's hard to get motivated to play a team that's 7-5...

That's not what I'm hearing from other Tech fans.

I'm sorry your team sucks so hard, man.

Best College Football Weekends

Maybe there's a better all-around college sports town -- we said as much last year -- but on any given Saturday in the fall, we know where we want to be: Knoxville

Think your school's game-day experience is all that and a bag of chips? Universities like to carry the one definitive aspect of their programs around like a trump card. But Tennessee sees whatever your school is bringing to the table and bets the House That General Neyland Built that it's got you beat.

What's the competition holding? Washington shows its floating tailgate off Puget Sound only to have Tennessee match it with the Volunteer Navy. Next up is Georgia and its famous bulldog, Uga. Sorry. Compared with Smokey, Tennessee's unflappable bluetick coonhound, Uga looks as clichéd as a poker-playing bulldog.

Michigan and Ohio State put up the Big House (2003 average attendance: 110,918) and the pregame dotting of the i, respectively. Tennessee, however, responds with its own six-digit crowds ('03 average: 105,038), which detonate as the Vols run through the fabled T before the game.

The challengers keep coming: Auburn's Tiger Walk, Nebraska's Sea of Red and West Virginia's Country Roads. Tennessee answers: Vol Walk, Orange Nation, Rocky Top. And don't forget the fabled checkerboard end zone. King the Vols.

1. TENNESSEE

Total Score: 54

ATMOSPHERE: 10. There's plenty of local color, with the Fanta-flavored scene much like the line in Rocky Top: "Wild as a mink but sweet as soda pop." STUDENT SECTION: 8. Cargo-pocket roulette is a common method for sneaking Tennessee Mash into Orange Nation. GOD, COUNTRY, FOOTBALL: 10. Vols fans are notoriously loyal and will pay any price for a ticket. Good thing cops look the other way when it comes to scalping. GIPPER FACTOR: 8. Tennessee leads the nation in wins since 1926, when General Neyland took over. Phillip Fulmer has the highest winning percentage among active I-A coaches. IN-GAME TRADITIONS: 8. Pregame, the Pride of the Southland Band forms the T through which Smokey and the players run. After big wins the quarterback often will conduct the band. EXTRACURRICULARS: 10. "Lookin' for a moonshine still?" as Rocky Top asks. Then you must have a pregame Volguarita at Calhoun's while overlooking the Volunteer Navy on the banks of the Tennessee. But don't miss out on Vol Walk, when players strut down Peyton Manning Pass to the stadium.

Thats great!

Or like...one...
Let's put it this way: When your most famous NFL ambassador is Michael Vick, that isn't a good thing...

He made a mistake... Before he got busted, he was everyones favorite athlete and now he's one of the most hated men in the country... Let me ask you a question, who do you hate more, Vick or Dante Stallworth?

VT didn't even make the Top 25 on that list, even getting bested by Montana. I'll put some pretty decent stock in that article because it was from 2004, back before Fulmer ran the program all the way off the road, and the fan interest was still near it's peak. It'll take time to build back up after several mediocre years, but we're on the right track.

Probably Vick. Haha.

At least Stallworth isn't the damn face of our entire program. Leave that to Mr. Manning.

Before they got to be mediocre in the past decade or so, they were just flat out bad. So clearly they've been "not mediocre" before.
