Raid The Virginia Tech Allotment!

I posted this on another thread, and it answers a lot of questions about why many of us feel good about this game...

Things we know to be true:

We have a talent edge over Va Tech
We have a coaching edge over Va Tech on both sides of the ball
Monte Kiffin > Brian Steinspring
We have a crowd edge over Va Tech
Va Tech has a history of poor bowl performance, with an all time bowl win percentage of 36%
Va Tech is an ACC team with a fairly easy schedule
Our season stats are very comparable to Va Tech, but we did it against tougher schedule, and we have a few outliers (UCLA) averaged in due to the poor start to the season.
Against our one common opponent, Alabama, Va Tech gave up nearly 500 yards. Tennessee gave up 150.

Bold is wrong

We do have a talent edge. Not like we did a few years ago, and not like we will again after another recruiting class or two, but still an edge. And not just based on recruiting ratings. Very few of their players are SEC caliber. Yes, they've got Ryan Williams who is very good, but that's essentially it. Their OL is awful.

You're half right about me being wrong about the Bama stats... Looked it up, and the 500/150 number I had was Alabama's total yards and Va Tech's total yards (even worse domination than I recalled)... We held Bama to about about 250, while gaining about 350. Either, huge differences in our performance against our common opponent. And we did it in their stadium.

Tennessee fans claim they have nothing to gain from playing the Hokies... Hokie fans claim we have nothing to gain by playing a sub-par SEC team... Why the hell are we arguing here? haha..

To those that said entering a stadium to Metallica is lame, I guess you can't please everybody... 99% of fans that come from opposing teams love it, ESPN loves it, and generally we have gotten good feedback for it... I'll take that...

Someone earlier had asked whether I was driving down from Maryland in response to me saying that it was nearly an 8 hour drive for most Hokie fans to Atlanta... Our alumni bases are spread out in 3 locales, Richmond, Northern Virginia/D.C area and the Roanoke Valley...

Richmond to Atlanta: 8 hours
Northern Virginia to Atlanta: 10 hours
Roanoke to Atlanta: 7 hours

Knoxville to Atlanta: 3 hours 30 mins

For the Bama game it was 50/50, so we can definitely travel with the best teams in the country... But Tennessee just isnt a big enough draw for us to make the commitment this bowl year... Enjoy flooding the dome in Orange and screaming your brains out to prove a point that Tennessee is more than just your average SEC team, but I think many of you will be surprised to see that the Hokies are a little more tougher than what you guys make us out to be....

No need to be rude.

I was not trying to be rude... Tennessee fans know they have an inferior stadium to ours when it comes to shear crowd noise, they will be out in full force in the Dome to prove a point that they can match the noise levels of their fellow SEC counterpart(LSU)...

Over the past two weeks I've come to learn that Hokie fans all seem to be savvy to so-called "feedback" from opposing fans. (What? Everyone fills out exit polls? Give me a break.) That's nonsense. 99% of your lame feedback stats are made up on the spot. Get over yourselves.

Was not 50/50. It was 60/40 Bama.

Not a big enough draw? This is typical, Hokie delusion.

A little tougher, eh? Is that what you really think? Or, do you think you're going to win the game?

Ok, let me address this nicely.

VT has a great stadium, enthusiastic fans, and fun game day atmosphere. I am not going to pretend otherwise.

However, to blatantly state that Lane Stadium is superior to Neyland Stadium by any measure is simply crazy talk. Ok, I'll concede you all know how to shake car keys more loudly.

Otherwise, Neyland Stadium is at least on par (remember, I said I'm going to be nice) with LS in terms of crowd noise.

I've been to both stadiums for the biggest games. You cannot compare less than 70,000 at LS to over 100,000 at Neyland Stadium. Can't do it.

If you've ever been to a UT game at Neyland when Florida, Georgia, Alabama, or SC was in the house, you wouldn't dare take on such a comparison.

Amen.

Let's just say I havent heard anything negative about it... It's widely considered the most electrifying entrance/atmosphere in college football today... I have never heard anything remotely close to that mentioned for Neyland... Come on man, Auzten Stadium in Oregon is even more intimidating than Neyland... In terms of size, Neyland owns Lane... In terms of making a difference in the game due to crowd noise, Neyland is not in Lane's league... I could list 40 websites to support that theory... It's a battle that I will never win on this forum, it is the Vols forum after all, but it's the truth... You can spin it whatever way you want... When fans talk about college football atmospheres, Neyland is no where to be found...

60/40 Bama? Where you at the game? If it wasnt 50/50, it was maybe 51/49... Good try though...

I understand the pride you have for Tennessee and I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but an un-ranked Tennessee is not a big draw for a top 15 program... The only reason Hokie fans are showing up for this is because we want nothing more than to beat an SEC team, even if it's a middle tier SEC team... We understand the ACC isnt up to par with the SEC, so we will take whatever team we can from the SEC and hope to beat them...I said it before, this game doesn't really help VT as much as it does Tennessee...

Thank you for saving me the time- this guy, like every Hokie fan I know, is delusional. While VT is, imo, better than us this year on the field, they are by no means a top 15 program. If we were in the ACC alongside them, they wouldn't have a single ACC championship.

99% of fans of opposing teams must be massive tools then.

I understand the subjective nature of this discussion, but I just don't see how any objective person that is not a huge tool would think that is cool. Seriously, whose idea was that? I just don't understand the thought process... "Hey, we need something to enter the field to... our team is Virginia Tech... what fits? I got it! Let's play Metallica and tell people to hop up and down to it! That is sooo X-treme!" Maybe that entrance is the reason why Va Tech has such a problem with New Jersey students going there.

And as far as ESPN "loving it," what do you think they're going to say when you do it? You expect Lou Hotlz to say "Man, that sure is tool-ish"?

But you're free to form your own opinion of what you think is cool, I suppose.

Apparently you can voice your opinion too- just go to a VT game and the lovely welcoming committee will supply you with a feedback form to fill out at your leisure and drop off on your way out. 99% of opposing fans love this idea!

These VT fans are almost as defensive about their small stadium as the Oregon fans. As for this "positive feedback" they speak of, maybe they are talking about comments on YouTube videos or something. I'm not knocking on Enter Sandman at all, it a great song, but compared to some of the other great entrances in COLLEGE football, it's not even in the same ballpark.

I just think it's hilarious how many of them go on and on about all the alleged "feedback." No one has such feedback- it's ridiculous. It's like someone in PR is fabricating articles in the school newspaper and all the hokies eat it up and tell everyone how great opposing fans think they are. They are simply credulous.

And why do they so quickly go to the positive feedback from other schools fans to defend it. I could care less if every other school were to vote our running through the T as the worst entrance every year, it's a UT thing so as a UT fan, obviously I think it's awesome. (However, this would never happen, running through the "t" IS awesome) VT fans don't think like this, they know it's lame, so they try to validate it with so-called market research, and saying other fans like it, so thereby, it must be good.

Agreed. I was at the VT/Bama game (which, btw, heather dinich on espn just had the gall to write that that was a close game!) and one of VT's "market researchers" was next to me and was so giddy about the Enter Sandman theme/entrance and turned and asked, "Isn't our entrance awesome? Isn't it like ten times better than their's?" I literally laughed at him and said, "Are you serious? They're just different." And then he went on to brag about how they were lunch-pail while Bama was caviar or something lame like that- I'm sure my input was relegated as an outlier in their massive feedback database. They are extremely lame fans.

I can only speak from what I have experienced and this is no where close to being true. I have been to Lane twice, once several years ago when they were playing Rutgers (nothing memorable but it was when Rutgers sucked and it was a 12:00 start) and this year when they played UNC. Thursday night game, showed on ESPN, great weather, close conference game and I couldn't have been more disappointed. The entrance was pretty cool but the atmosphere was lacking. Never got very loud and the Key Play deal just got on my damn nerves.

VT's football atmosphere is extremely overrated IMO.

Just a rediculous statement, had he ever watched Alabama play football before? Bama's M.O. throughout their history has been a solid running game and a tough defense. That statement would have made sense last weekend coming from a 'Bama fan and relating them against UF, but from VT fans, it just makes no sense.
