After watching them both, I have to say BB-8 has a lot more personality than R2.

Gotta go with the new instead of the tried and true.

For an astromech-type droid, BB-8 didn't fix much of anything. Sure, he can do a thumbs-up and has those nifty grappling cables, but he didn't do much else. He's cute and has plenty of personality. He's a chihuahua and R2 is a border collie.
