From Tennessee[/i]

TENNESSEE HEAD COACH Bruce Pearl
On Wichita State's Paul Miller
"He is a big lad. He does a terrific job of scoring down in the low post, he can score over either shoulder, and he's an excellent passer. I haven't seen many teams out in the Valley go out and double (team) him because he's such an effective passer, and he's poised. He's a real tough cover. They do a terrific job, both in their secondary offense, as well as (in) some of their sets, of getting him the ball, and with great spacing. He's going to be a challenge to cover one-on-one.

"They've got really good balance and I think that's the key. He does shoot a good percentage. He gets himself to the foul line a lot. In some of their bigger games, he's put up big numbers. A lot depends on what the defenses do, and you sort of scratch where it itches. If people show him a lot of attention, they've got talent off of the post that can also score."

On Wichita State's Sean Ogirri
"He's terrific. He's a great shooter. What a match-up with him and Chris Lofton tomorrow. I think he really enjoyed playing against an opponent that was outside the Missouri Valley Conference, from the stand point of that he got a few looks yesterday. And if he's looking at it, he's making it. How do they get him looks? You see who's setting the back screen on (Paul) Miller's man. He's (Sean) in there setting that screen a lot, and then he's popping out to the perimeter. They do a terrific job of putting his defender in a position where either you help off on the post, or you give up the three, and that's a good offense. Plus, in transition he's also pretty good. Tomorrow, chances are it could be a little bit more of an up tempo game, and we have to find him in transition because if he gets it down the floor he's going to make it."

From Witchita State

On Tennessee sophomore guard Chris Lofton
"The thing that really makes him tough is he just can make bad shots, and he's going to make a couple tomorrow. We're going to be draped all over him, and he's going to be fading back, and he's going to make a couple tough shots. Fortunately for us, that happens a lot, especially in our home building, and we've seen it a lot, so we won't get discouraged and we'll move on."

WICHITA STATE JUNIOR KARON BRADLEY
On Tennessee's full-court pressure
"We worked on it a little bit today in practice. They're similar to a team in our conference (Drake). We're going to do the same thing we did against Drake, so there are some similarities there."

I think Witchita State is going to come ready to play, but Bruce has got the team rolling now. We will beat them with no problem.

From everything that I've read, the shockers seem a little too cocky for a 7 seed.....but we'll see what they got....

WSU fan here.

I hope Pearl's comment about the MVC not doubling Miller is a misquote.

EVERY team in the Valley, except Bradley (with their 7'1" NBA prospect) and Southern Illinois, doubled Miller. SIU paid for it when Miller lit them up for 30. WSU beat Bradley 2 out of 3 games, including both home and away in conference play.

Teams that were most successful against Miller did one of three things. They either outmuscled him and kept him at least 5' away from the lane or they played a defensive scheme to deny a passing lane to him. The third option was most effective: Put him on the bench with foul problems. If Miller gets the ball on the block, good things are about to happen for WSU.

I don't mean to be blowing smoke about how great Miller or WSU is. I just hope that information about the opposing team makes the game more enjoyable for fans to watch.

KU's players apparently thought all they had to do was walk on the court, let an MVC team read the name on the jerseys, and they would have the W. I doubt UT's players will make that mistake.

Don't overlook Couisnard. He's not getting much press. His game has been a little quiet lately. He's about due for a breakout game. Couisnard has good games that don't show in the stat sheets. His best skill is probably his ability to disrupt an opponents offensive and defensive schemes. He doesn't work for many blocks, but at 6'4" he did block a Patrick O'Bryant (7'1") jump shot at the buzzer to preserve a W over Bradley.

WSU is either really cocky or terrible at complimenting opponents.
Let's call it "terrible at complimenting opponents". I am absolutely not "cocky" about this game.

I'm just trying to provide information about the style of play WSU has used this year. Obviously never done it against UT's players, so previous results don't really matter.

I was hoping any information I could provide might give UT fans some things to watch for during the game.

LOL, I was talking about quotes from the WSU players and coaches, not you.

Whew!

I've found UT's fans to be some of the best I've run across from the "major" conferences. I was hoping I hadn't accidentally offended some.

From the time I've spent here - I guarantee I now have a favorite SEC team and it's UT.

haha trust me, you have to do WAY more to offend us. We were deffiently refearing to the players. they just seem over confident about this game. I saw a quote last night were one of the players said we looked like a mid major team.....

"looked like a mid-major" was a sound byte pulled from a larger statement. I think it also came from Turgeon in answer to a question abut preparing for UT.

It was DEFINITELY referring to style of play rather than a statement about anything resembling ability.

The entire statement included a reference to Pearl's background with Dr. Tom Davis and the similar styles UT and Drake use.

The remainder of the statement included, "except UT plays it with better athletes".

How does someone become a WSU fan?

Simple - get a degree from WSU and don't be a foreign exchange student.

The students from China and India just don't seem to become big fans.
