"Coach Fulmer always says the best thing about freshman is that they become sophomores."

Really?! REALLY?!!!!

This is from an article linked on the home page, am I just being overly critical here or does this come across as ridiculously closed minded to everybody else? I guess its not really news to anyone around here but do you think Meyer ever felt this way last year with Harvin and Teabow on the way to winning a NC?

it does seem like a dumb thing to say but I try and not be too critical when it comes to things like this. If the press was reporting on everything I have said over the year there would probably be things just as bad if not worse.

You could right a book on some of the things Fulmer said in 2005 alone...

It's not even a slightly dumb thing to say. Freshmen are inexperienced, mistake prone and often times are physically just not ready for the step up in competition. There are a few exceptions to the rule every year, but if you ask 100 coaches about having to rely on playing freshmen, they are going to give you the same answer. They hate it.

Very true, and I'm sure I'm just looking for something to be critical of right now but it just seems so out of date when you watch other teams play and true freshman are contributing all over the place.

Name all the true freshmen that are contributing in the SEC right now.

True freshmen have made impacts in a few of the games we've played the last two years. Harvin, Tebow, Jahvid Best (Cal), and Grant and Jackson at Bammer have all made plays in games against us that have helped their teams to beat us. Meanwhile, our guys are on the bench for the most part, unless injuries force us to play them.

Still waiting on that list of players that are "all over the place".

There are always going to be a few here and there, but the idea that everybody is playing a bunch of true freshmen who are having a huge impact while we are burying them on the depth chart for no reason is a complete myth.

Just a few minutes ago I was listening to 680 out of Atlanta and the UGA fans are complaining that Mark Richt is going to give Thomas Brown carries this week when he comes back from injury and cut down on the playing time of freshman Knowshaun Moreno. It happens everywhere.

First off, if he sits Moreno down, then he is crazy. As far as our history of playing freshmen, it is a fact that Fulmer has only had 2 freshmen starters on opening day in the 15 or so years he's been here (Scheaffer and Berry). It is a fact that Fulmer didn't give Jamal Lewis significant minutes until after the 97 Florida game. It's a fact that Fulmer has chosen to play borderline upperclassmen talent over equally talented freshmen.

I named about 5 impact freshmen we've run into in just the past 2 seasons that played significant roles in handing losses over to the Vols in my previous post.

So you would play the inexperienced freshman over an equally talented upperclassman?

That certainly explains many of your views. This is just a wild guess, but you're not a coach are you?

Answer me this then...If Freshman become Sophomores the question is what has happen to the Juniors who have become Seniors. Looks like we should always have a winning team if you look at the progression in this way. Actually, our coaches simply become a year older and are a year more out of the loop in knowing what it takes to become winners.:banghead2:

There is nothing wrong with this quote if Spurrier said the same thing everyone would be chuckling at his wit.

If the talent is equal, why on earth would you play the guy with less experience?
i get what you're saying...and would agree...but that is how you get experience at the same time....

the issue of player development always rears it's ugly head when these kind of discussions get started.

Mark Levine or Jamal Lewis? Jarod Parrish or Rogan/Vinson? These are the choices that Fulmer has had and has been able to botch...

Jarod Parrish was replaced by Eric Berry in the 2nd half of the first game this season.
