“Quitting on your teammates is hard to take, as a coach,” he said. “That’s everything we stand for — our commitment to one another and, for whatever reason, that wasn’t there for him. He thought this was a better avenue so you would have to ask him for those (answers)".

“You can’t have guys coming and going and have a group of players committed to what they’re doing day in and day out, putting all the time and energy into it,” the coach said. “It’s not fair to the players that are on our team if they’re not committed to the team.”

I thought this was telling given our situation. Anyone want to take a guess as to who said this?

I know, I know. "Let it go; he's gone". The point is not to rehash Hurd leaving. It is good to get another perspective, however. :pilot:

Definitely not CBJ. This is from Mike Stoops talking their DE who is leaving to get ready for the draft.

Bob Stoops's brother, the Defensive Coordinator at Oklahoma... His stud DT decided to quit so he can prepare for the draft. A very troubling reality is beginning to emerge and I hope the NFL punishes the selfish actions of such players through their wallet.

Charles Walker leaves Oklahoma Sooners to prepare for NFL draft

"Quitting on your teammates is hard to take as a coach," Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops told reporters after Tuesday's practice.

The other point to this is that CBJ hasn't "lost the team". As vols, we look at our problems and upsets against us like we are the only ones who struggle from time to time. But other big time programs get upset from week to week, and other big players at premier programs leave in the middle of the year.

Make it where these guys can go pro as soon as they are eighteen and that wouldn't be a problem.

Where else in life do you get to tell an adult that they have to work for free for three years after high school.
I know that people say well they are paid with a free education. They do, but they aren't allowed to make a living off their ability or they won't receive the free education and training for the future job.

I think this is what people miss. In his 4th year Butch just suffered his 1st upset and fans are ready to burn it all down. I've never been a CBJ fan but I can at least look at the facts and see that Harbaugh and Dabo have the same # of upsets to bad teams as Butch in 2016.

Basketball? I agree. Football? It would be a disaster. I honestly can't think of one player who would've been able to physically and mentally make the transition from high school to pro on the gridiron. Adrian Peterson is the ONLY name, IMO, that even comes close... Facts are this guy bailed on his team and will probably do it again when he is a professional athlete.

How theses athletes are compensated is an entirely different conversation and is really a philosophical discussion that needs its very own thread.

But why are you so sure that the fans are only upset at the fact Butch Jones lost to SC?
Could it possibly be the way the Vols have played in many games?
Is this the worst UT defense (stat wise) in many years?

Why do we care more about protecting college football rather than the athletes? Dude had two concussions and is making the right decision for him and his family.

Exactly. Stoops did the same for his family when the opportunity came along.

He is leaving his internship and going to get paid for his services. It's a huge move and anything he can do to maximize his earning potential is on him

Leaving? Last I checked, it was still November and Oklahoma still has football games left. In fact, they still have an opportunity to win the Big12...

Even if they were 0-9, he didn't leave, he quit. Black and white. Cut and dry. NFL GMs and Head Coaches LOVE that quality in a player, let me tell you.
