My 2nd time quitting dip. Had been tobacco free for 5 years but started back up again in May when wife had miscarriage. I am on day 2 with no dip. Any advice? Not sure how the hell I did it the first time. I’ve been chewing a lot of gum and sucking on jolly ranchers

Ive been using tobacco free with nicotine, it's not awful. It's a better option, but not a great one.

Get the fake stuff from Walmart. It helps get over the fixation of having a dip in your lip. I did that for a few months and eventually got to where in didn't need it. I'm 4.5 years without touching it after 20+ of dipping. Quit cold turkey after a throat scare

I quit December 26, 2011. I carry a big pack of vitamin C drops in my persanal vehicles and work van. I'll get a drop after a meal or when I'm driving. It was hard to quit but I made up my mind, bought my last can, and when it was gone I didn't buy it anymore. To be honest, I think about dipping every day. I'll catch myself looking at the price of Red Seal when I'm checking out at the store. It's hard not to buy it when it's on sale. I had dipped 2 cans a week for 15 years. Prayer helped a lot too. Good luck, you can do it.

First of all, sh!t man, I am so sorry to hear about the miscarriage. Hope both of you are doing well now.

Second, you're an idiot. I know you know that. I say it as a person who spent a week when she was 18 learning to smoke, so that when I would go to the get-together with area Wendy's workers, I could look cool, and painstakingly developed a habit that would last 21 years. I say it as a person who quit both times she got pregnant and started back after she was done nursing the kids. I say it as a fellow idiot. I say it as an idiot who used to think a dose of nicotine was gonna make anything better. That's just the addict talking of course. Getting a nicotine fix has never made anything better in the history of ..... um ... history.

I quit smoking three weeks before I went to court for my divorce. Very much a "screw you" move on my part.

I used the lozenges to get my nicotine fix. That was 2004. I used gum and lozenges for 14 years. FOURTEEN YEARS!!! You know why? Cause I'm an idiot. And I'm a nicotine addict.

I don't really know why I waited so long to quit using them. Except I was weak and scared. I'm not proud of it. I'm really embarrased about it. But not embarrassed enough to not encourage you to admit you're an idiot, who knows that a dose of nicotine never ever changed anything for the better. Last spring I bought nicotine patches and Ice Breakers mints. Only used the patches for 2 days. Still never let myself run out of Ice Breakers mints. Just another addiction it seems.

I'm truly thankful that you want the freedom bad enough to post here and talk about it.

Sorry if that's way more than you needed. Sometimes I just need to talk about. So thanks for letting me do that.

And God Bless you and your wife Dustin.

That’s a long story that everybody is tired of hearing. Doing ok other than finding out last week I have diabetes. 😐
Seriously?? Cause you needed another challenge? Dang H! So what does that mean exactly? Like, what do you have to do different and how does it affect your treatment?

Sorry to hear about your divorce. Yes all is well and are expecting in February now. The idiot part is funny because when I started I told myself “once a day isn’t going to hurt”. That didn’t last long. Then I told myself “I can quit whenever I want.” Waited 4 months until I was on my last can to say enough is enough and I am better then this. Today hasn’t been too bad. Had some moments that I wanted to run to the store and get a can but talked myself out of it. So yes I agree I am an idiot it is harder then hell to stop. Hope all is well with you and god bless you!

Thanks for the tip. If it gets really tough I may have to go that route. Glad to hear you quit

They gave me Metformin pills to take and said I have to cut back in carbs and sugar. Still hard to believe I could get diabetes at this stage in my life. I think when I had the short bout with pancreatitis is when everything changed.

I quit in July after 17 years of dipping.
I used the Smokey Mountain Herbal to quit.
I have the urges still but haven’t touched tobacco since .

Congrats on quitting. I am now +/- 90 days free of Skoal. I have been using Zyn pouches which contain nicotine salts and food grade flavorings. They come in 6mg and 4mg strengths. Gives the mouth feel and the nicotine but is 100% tobacco free.

Hope that helps.

1 day at a time. Switch up your routines/stay busy. Also--get rest! Go to sleep a little earlier. My cravings were always worse in the afternoon/evenings. Also-know when your cravings are the strongest (like after a meal) and have your gum ready. Chew the hell out it-eat a whole friggin pack. I really feel it took about 3-4 weeks to get the urgent need for a fix to go away. After a month it was a lot easier...the cravings were a lot easier to manage. Go to the dentist and get a good cleaning/check up. That can help motivate you that you're getting your mouth healthy. It's been 3yrs for me and it was the best decision I ever made. Gums and teeth are healed and the dentist cannot tell I've ever had one. You've done it once--You can do it again! Keep it up!

I would recommend trying triumph chew, it's made from mint plants and 100% tobacco free. They have different strengths of nicotine such as 50%, 25%, and 0 so it's really easy to ease off. I pleased off by stepping down 1 level a week, so 50% then 25 etc. I dont know your preferred flavor of chew but if its straight, like mine, then I'd recommend the vanilla bourbon one as it's the closest. Fair warning, it's not exactly them same texture wise but it's close enough. I think it's a very good alternative for chewing that more people should consider, there are other brands too I just never tried them.

Triumph has been the best way for me to quit, I didn't get the bad temper that usually comes with kicking the habit and it still let me dip anyway without all the worry. I unfortunately jumped back on Skoal but deployments and their stress were the factors for that. I'll be going that route again once I'm back on a normal routine.

Edit: For you or others who may be interested or curious here is a good website that did reviews on different brands.
