Quit believing the bs narrative that Tennessee cannot get a good coach

Rebuilding doesn't require the entire program to be torched to the ground first. Name a head coach in modern college football who went on to find a significant measure of success after taking a 5-7 team from his first season to 1-11 in his second, only to bounce back in his 3rd or 4th.

This is college football at the highest level. There are no absolutes. Every team is different. Every coach is different. Every rebuild is different. Fulmer coached until 2008. We've had a decade of bad choices, mistakes and embarrassments on and off the field. That's 10 years of deterioration. To expect Pruitt to undo all that and get this rudderless ship back on course in a year and a half is being unrealistic.

As I said, no one knows if Pruitt is going to make it....even Fulmer. Still, let the man flip the roster and fill it with his players before making a judgment on him. Hell, we've got posters already blaming him for 1-11 this year. Just a tad premature wouldn't you say? Bottom line, Pruitt is the coach and will remain so for at least this year and next. All this talk about firing him does nothing except harm recruiting and gives opponents ammunition to use against us. Serves no purpose.

Couldn't find one could you? In your mind though, Pruitt is going to be the first, regardless of the statistical improbability.

He goes 1-11, keeping him 2 more years will just sink the program further into a mire for the next coach.that will inevitably follow Pruitt before his contract expires.

Hiring a new coach only has a 1 in 10 chance of success. I think instead we break the mold and hire an experienced CEO/motivator who will make damn sure the other coaches are doing their jobs. Most of these head coaches, and especially assistants moving to HC, are in over their heads with management issues. Some of them get lucky but few of them actually become great managers. Someone needs to connect the dots on a daily basis, you already have a wealth of knowledge at the table, use it, make them work together. Move Pruitt to DC where he can be productive. Start a new trend.

This isn't true at all, but at least our coaching searches are entertaining, unlike the team this year.

I see what your saying. Our program is a dumpster-fire however and I think it would take more than that to interest a great coach to come here and combat the fire. You're right about the admin/boosters. They won't pay top dollar as long as they're still filling seats. By the time their not, it will be too late. The boosters have already displayed they don't care about winning by continuing to support bargain coaches.

how about for once we hire a proven real head football coach... one with a name who can recruit on there own by that

The “proven” thing has happened 1 time in school history. once.......let that sink in.

How is it a BS narrative? Leach ain't coming after we burned him. No other big time coach is gonna come here with the program in disarray and firing a coach after not even 2 years. Not to mention, if we fired CJP this year, we'd be on the hook for 9 million buyout, not counting his staff. Add Butch'd buyout as well, and it's rather clear we wouldn't even have they money to offer a big time coach even if one were interested in the gig.

You heard it here first......James Franklin
I'd like the hire. But it's unlikely. Penn State has pockets that are at least as deep as ours. They don't pay their basketball coach nearly as much as us. They won't have 2 buyouts to pay (we'll still have Butch and then Pruitt). The Big 10 makes as much (or at least very close to it) in TV revenue.

That's a bidding war we can't win. If Franklin's name came up, he'd just be Gundying us.

I've seen many of you on this forum saying things like "No good coach wants to come here." Why even believe that nonsense when it obviously isn't true. Let's look at the facts:

In 2010, Tennessee could have hired Kevin Sumlin and hired Dooley instead. Bad decision.

In 2013, Tennessee hired Jones- a midling coach from.the MAC. Bad decision.

And in 2017, Tennessee opted to hire Greg Schiano. Apparently, he was the guy all along and there was no real search to speak of. After the fan backlash and that hire getting revoked, Tennessee could have still hired Mike Leach. What did they do? They decided to hire a guy who has never been a head coach before. Bad, no, terrible decision.

What is the common denominator in all that? Bad decisions made by our admins.

So please spare me this nonsense about Tennessee being an undesirable job. We can and would get a great coach if we could just get out of our own way. Again, Mike Leach wanted the job and would have been a home run hire.

Agree 1000%. Why in the hell do fans want to just keep the terrible coach we currently have because we haven’t done well here in the past. Do some of y’all just accept being with a fat ugly chick because the hot girl tuned you down? Some of y’all don’t need to answer the question. Lol. But the point is you keep trying until you get it right. Just look at bama. They had 6 different head coaches between 2000 and 2007. Of course 2007 is the year they landed saban and the rest is history.

AMEN.... I’ve been a Vols Football fan since the Bobby Scott days when my high school football coach would give me, and others on the team, free tickets to the game. I don’t blame the mediocre coaches that come here one bit. Who in their right mind would turn down a multi million dollar job that’s laid in their lap by a tightwad, inept administration? The last ten years from the Kiffin debacle on has been a joke and the worst ten years in Vol football history. It’s the Judas holding the money sack that’s put us in the present situation and no one else. IMO of course.

Hard pass on the pirate.
Wrong. There is no denying his accomplishments, his record, at much more difficult to recruit places than Tennessee. I could care less how eccentric a coach is. I care about the Ws and Ls. The Pirate knows how to get a lot more Ws than Ls and he does it without all the 5 star hoopula.

It just keeps piling up. One bad hire after another, one shovel onto the pile after another. It make take years at the bottom and an empty stadium before UT takes football seriously again.

They shoot Horses don't they?

You are setting the low bar as the high.

Of course you are supposed to beat Ga. State. But the expectations here were to beat some two shot combo of Fla, S Car., Ky, Vandy, and Mizzou and I'd say very few of your fans expect that now. But put in an Urban Meyer or Mike Leach tomorrow and your fan base would not stand for a 5-7 season next year and want to fire him, too.
