Questions/Information for those attending the SECCG in Atlanta

I'll second this. GAVol, where did you go to school? State? Tech?

One of my not so fondest memories was visiting GA Tech to see a friend in 96 and walking across the North Avenue bridge at night to get to the Varsity. That was a pretty enlightening experience. :)

Georgia State . . . Thank goodness it is a commuter school.

Around how much do you think ticket prices will be since LSU's loss to Arkansas around the CNN center?

I have to strongly disagree here. Perimeter/Dunwoody is way too far. If you're coming to Atlanta to see the game and have fun, you dont want to stay in the suburbs!

Would you go to Nashville and stay in Cookeville?

Would you go to Knoxville and stay in Cleveland, TN?

haha.

Plus, MARTA is to be avoided at all costs. It is the worst public transit system ever.
I strongly disagree with your post. If you wait for the initial throngs of people to ride out on MARTA after the sporting event, you'll have a much less crowded ride on the way back. Plus your comparisons with Crossville/Nashville and Cleveland/Knoxville don't make sense, given that those towns are a greater distance apart and don't offer rail between the two.

Seriously, the Perimeter Mall area has plenty of hotels, shopping, restaurants, etc and has two MARTA stations (e.g. Dunwoody/Sandy Springs) right near by.

Yes. Still, State has some pretty nasty panhandlers/mental cases around the periphery of campus.

Another fun downtown memory:

I used to play in a band that often had gigs at the Somber Reptile off of Marietta Street. One night as were unloading gear, a gentleman came in offering to sell us some stereo equipment that had been freshly ripped out of a vehicle. Naturally, we politely declined the transaction.

I won't make that guarantee. :eek:hmy:

Gavol you have me worried I am just a country boy but have been to big city's before like new york times square. are you saying this is not a safe area. Northside Drive about 4 blocks from the dome. If this unsafe Ill reconsider the stay here no problem.

I'd stay elsewhere. You can't really compare that area of Atlanta to Times Square ... it's apples and oranges.

MARTA is extremely easy to use, and is nicer than the NYC transit system.

I don't want to completely scare you, but that area gets seedy really fast as you travel away from the Dome. If I had a room there (and I doubt I would), I would make sure I knew exactly where I was going and stay alert. You probably won't have any problems, but it's not the kind of area that you want to get lost in.

I just checked and found a good number of hotel rooms in ATL for $85 or less in areas where the bums are at least polite.

I came down for the game in 2004 at the last minute. We found a decent hotel out by the airport for next to nothing.

Where do I need to stay and how do I get to the dome Can anyone help me out anyone.

It's getting dogged on here, but I would highly suggest staying somewhere near a MARTA line. If you are wanting to save money, book a hotel 30 minutes north of town in a place like Cartersville and then drive to a MARTA station and take it into the city early on Saturday. You might have to spend a few minutes riding a train, but you won't pay a dime for parking.

This is a good point. Also, please bear in mind that parking at a lot near the GA Dome isn't going to save you time after the game when compared to MARTA. You'll be waiting for trains or waiting to get out of the parking lot, so you'll need to have patience either way.

MARTA's not bad. If someone made the Cal trip and compares it to BART, MARTA sucks. However, BART is as good as it gets in public transport. MARTA is definitely preferable to sitting in Downtown Atlanta traffic for a couple of hours.

Yes but . . . if you ride it from the north side of town you'll have to switch trains at Five Points and go west 1 or 2 stops. It's really not very hard though - the stop is called "Georgia Dome/World Congress Center".

Also, I just found a $70 rate at a Crowne Plaza in Marietta just north of town. That is a dirt cheap rate at an upscale hotel . . . definitely not the Castleberry Inn.

Ok...I think you are missing my sarcasm here.

My point is this:

Why would you come to Atlanta and then go stay way outside of town? Midtown will be HOPPING Saturday night. Tons of fun. Why miss out on that by staying way the heck up at the Perimeter by all the mini-malls?

If you are going to come enjoy a weekend in Atlanta, then I say stay in actual Atlanta. Every city has a mall, a Cheesecake Factory and a Best Buy. Enjoy what this city has to offer near downtown/midtown.

Thats the real Atlanta....not the Perimeter.

just my .02

Also, this hotel puts you squarely in between Buckhead/Lenox Mall/Phipps Plaza and Dunwoody/Perimeter Mall.
