Questions About WR. U

Myth.

That quote could have come from Travis Henry along with "Lemme Hold Five Dollars" and "Can you sell my bowl gifts for me?" but Jamal is a very smart guy. He is a successful business owner right now, while Travis is bankrupt and in prison.

Fulmer cared about history and taught it to his players. Kiffin did not at all. Dooley does deeply.

Thanks for clarifying that point. It has been quite some time since I heard the specifics of that story. I have met Fulmer and know that he was always very passionate about passing on the history and traditions associated with Tennessee football. Unfortunately, history does not tend to resonate with today's youth.

i'm not mad.

i find the tennessee passing attack being the best in the SEC during the mid 90's as humorous as the whole decade of dominance thing.

Point taken. Manning got his tail handed to him by Wuerffel and Co.

It was jumped on last year with Da'rick, Justin, and Matt coming to play.

1. I have no idea how this started.
2. I do know as far back as as the Willie Gault years, the UT was referred to as WR. University. I suspect it goes farther back than that.
3. I humbly admit that the name properly belongs to Syracuse despite claims to it from Oho State and Miami. Syracuse has produced the best pro receivers in a twenty year span. Marvin Harrison (HOF), Art Monk (HOF), Rob Moore, Kevin Johnson, Qadry Ismail.
4. Back to point: The label bestowed on the UT is not recent, it goes back a good number of years. In part because we have sent a rather large number of WRs into the pro ranks despite being a running team practically all of our history. So no, it isn't a recent jumping on due to the recent enrollments of Da'rick, Justin, and Matt coming to play.

Y'all need to open your history book, first off I recommend y'all get the volnetwork video best of the big orange wide receivers. It's a older film but it will explain why we are called wide receiver U.

Second. It all started back in the 60's when Track star Richmond flowers was recruited to UT and also Johnny Mills and Lester McClain. Then from the 1970's were names like Larry Seivers and Stanly Morgan. The name took off in the 80's when track stars like Anthony Hancock, Willie Gault, Tim McGee, Thomas TD Woods, Alvin Harper. In the 90's we had Carl Pickens, Joey Kent, Marcus Nash, Peerless Price. Y'all should be young enough to remember the past 10 years of receivers.

NOW GET STUDING YOUR BIG ORANGE HISTORY!! CLASS DISMISSED

I've said it before, were not WR U, people made that crap up last year when we finally found a gunslinger (after years of misery with JC and MS last year).

We are a powerhouse running school. That's how we destroyed the SEC before, and how we will do it again.

Granted, yes of course we need badass receivers and a good QB to spread the ball, but running should be our first line of attack. Notwithstanding TB.

Umm we've historically been known as WRU. Got the name from guys like Carl Pickens, Peerless Price, Jermaine Copeland, Marcus Nash, Robert Meachem and others

wuerffel threw 114 touchdown passes at florida.

1 out of every 6 completions was a td for his career. 1 out of 6.

OK. Thank you. Hopefully we return the favors during the Bray era. And continue it during the Worley era.

Ok I'll admit I was wrong saying it started last year. Yes, I do know of our outstanding tradition of WRs dating back decades. So we were WR U, and maybe we still are.

My whole point for those who don't read between the print is that "I" believe we have a stronger tradition with running backs than receivers. Hell, we are Tennessee, the greatest (uncontroverted fact) team with the greatest traditions in the country in RBs, WRs, offense/defense etc etc.

So I apologize for saying it started last year, I'll admit when I'm wrong.

Since the term originated during Kippy Brown's tenure between 83-89, a lot of sports columns made comments of the return to wide receiver u when he returned in '09. Probably where the confusion set in for younger fans.

Just out of curiosity, are you an english teacher? The only time I ever see you post is when you're correcting someone's grammar.

Nope, not an English teacher. I don’t even play one on TV, nor did I sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I did go to school in East Tennessee in an era when the fundamentals of English were stressed by most of the faculty and indelibly impressed upon our little Tennessee munchkin brains. Lessons like that are hard to forget. For better or worse, seeing such basic rules abused just pushes my internal correction button almost every time I come across such an error, especially when the mistake is made by someone who probably knows better. Since Tennessee fans are the best fans in the world, I guess I just expect perfection in all things, even if that is unrealistic. But, my corrections are meant merely as constructive criticism, not as castigation. I’ve been known to make a typographical error or letter transposition myself in the past, but don’t mind someone else pointing out my mistakes. Life is one big learning experience and that’s just part of the learning process. And very few of my posts on this site have to do with grammar correction, but it may seem that way if those are the only ones you see. If they annoy you, just ignore them and move along. It won’t be the first time I’ve been ignored.

Alvin Harper and Carl Pickens can't be named without Anthony Morgan. He played 6 years in the league.

We haven't been WR U in years....not sure we are quite there yet. Hunter certainly makes the best argument for today.

That is exactly what you didn't do.

It started yearsss ago, back when our WRs were track stars and had world class speed. Its not just something that happened last year or the year before. It wont take time to get back the title's honor.. Mainly because we own that title. Nuff said.
