What happened with them and basketball? Did/does Barnes have interest in having them on the team? Did they try out? Any possibility they join the team once the football season is over?

Sorry, if this has been asked and answered, but I did a search and couldn't find anything recent.

There's really been nothing released, but I'm pretty certain they were never going to be a part of the team while football was still happening. Once football is officially over, we may see them popping up at practices.

I'd actually bet you don't. At least to me, it doesn't seem like it would be smart to introduce two additional risk factors to the mix for COVID purposes, especially when they aren't likely to make a difference on the court.

I mean, they've been under virus protocol for months now, so they'd be easy to add. There's also a fair chance they have already had it, and we just don't know it. As for making a difference on the court, practicing with strong competition makes players better. Adding a high 3* and a 4* to practice can do nothing but help in my opinion. These aren't unranked walk-ons we're talking about...

UPDATE: Disregard this post. I don't know what I'm talking about.

I will try to answer your questions:

1. They are walk ons, and they have officially been on the team for quite a while.

2. If COVID protocols have restricted them from any kind of bball team participation, that's news to me.

3. Assuming their status as walk ons is correct and current, there's no reason to believe at this point they will get PT outside of garbage time. That's not a knock on them, but that's the case for walk ons on mediocre teams. We are much better than mediocre, so it's hard to imagine them getting PT when we haven't heard a peep about them from practice reports.

I don't disagree on their talent, but that talent, even though they are better than an average walk-on, is a bit diluted walking onto the court with our current group of players who eat, sleep, and breath basketball only. Especially when they haven't practiced a single minute with our team. We aren't starved for talent.

Despite being in the same protocol, if they haven't had the virus, they are just two additional factors that must be controlled. Doesn't seem worth it to me for a team that has already cancelled 5 games without playing their first one, yet.

Wasn’t Wideman practically a 4* type of talent?
He was, but I'd wager he hasn't touched a basketball in a team setting in 8 months, or more. That talent is mitigated at this level without practice and reps. He has probably maintained his individual skill and athleticism, but he would be a lost ball in high weeds in Barnes' system, and his talent relative to the talent of those ahead of him isn't such that he would see the floor in meaningful minutes based solely on talent alone.

I’ve been waiting to see both these on the football field this year.
Yep. I have a hard time seeing either grab minutes on this team. Maybe let them be practice bodies, but I doubt even that takes place. Kids are always talking about playing 2 sports. It's not like high school. This is the SEC. Your chosen sport becomes full time and so demanding that it's just not something that happens. They need to focus on football.

I would think both might get a much better shot next season if they join the squad post FB and the the two potential one and dones in fact go that route....

It's actually relatively common. Baseball and track are the two most common ones though. Basketball is really rare at least at the P5 level.

Their future is football, but Wideman can make a impact on the court before he leaves . Very good player

I’m pretty sure neither one would get any playing time this year. They may be good basketball players but they have not practiced with team and it’s going to be hard enough to get everyone playing time as it is.
