Question for the Gamers

All of his friends are getting new 360's for Christmas.
Won't he feel silly.

This is actually a concern of mine. He finally gets a PS3 and all of his friends, who have had one for a while, move to the XBox with Kinect. That wouldn't surprise me one bit. Actually, I think a couple of his friends already have both systems, so it seems like a wash to me. Plus, these boys play together (in real life) all the time. What are they going to do, split up and all go to their separate houses to get online? Seems senseless to me. Of course, general senselessness wouldn't stop them, I suppose. I have a suspicion that all of them would want to come to our house to play the Kinect, if we're the only ones who have it..

Does anyone have any thoughts on the memory issues, which I've been reading about? Only 4gb on the $299 Kinect bundle. You can add up to 32gb via USB flash drives. That seems like enough to me, but I'm not a heavy gamer. At 8, my son isn't either, but he might be in a few years. Surely we can upgrade down the road if need be. Any thoughts?

Yes - actually, lol. I used to do it in the same house as someone - just different rooms - and with a neighbor less than 100 feet away in his house as well.

Ah, fond memories of the orignal Halo and pre-Xbox Live. Nothing like having 4 xbox's all running in the same house, wires running from every room. Those were some good times.

Why don't you ask their parents if they are planning on getting a kinect or 360 and plan accordingly so he doesn't feel left out.

lulz. chavis, you need to play black ops with all of us sometime.

I'm up for some Black Ops...only game I really play on my son's PS3 but only on the PS network...none of that crappy Xbox stuff at our house...

Only kidding about the Xbox...don't really know much about it...if the OP's wife likes to dance though the Xbox with Kinnect plus pole bundle may be the way to go...

If you get the Kinect bundle get the one with the 250gb HDD..plenty of storage so you can load the games to the HDD and not hear the roar of the drive when you're playing ...prolongs drive life as well...plus if he gets to where he wants to download some arcade games off Xbox live those can be around 1gb and ive got one that is 2gb is size..

I don't think anyone's considered that the kid's 8. He in all likelihood won't be playing that much online for several more years.

There's a good chance that these systems may be moving on to their next generation by then; if that's the case, how much consideration should online play really have in this decision?

This is my thought as well. Yes, he wants the PS3, but it's mainly because he thinks he will be doing a bunch of online gaming with his neighbors. I just don't think he will. I think he will have more fun with the Kinect. Isn't it my job as the parent to help him make the better decision?

If I look back 20 some years to when i was 8, I'd be happy as a pig in **** with either choice. It's possible to tic tac reasons for either system all day without coming to a conclusion, so personally I would make the decision as if you were buying it for yourself.

Now he'll get both.

lol yup. but you can still get a good deal on them. Gamestop takes anything newer than PS2 if you've got anything. plus join the rewards program and you get discounts on used games and more trade in value when you trade games in. It's free and totally worth it.

Doubt that anyone really cares, but the decision is made. Kinect is purchased. Son is on board (not that he knows he's getting it just yet, just chatting him up). Sold him with this:

YouTube - Kinect: Star Wars Trailer

I showed that to him and his buddies and now they all want one.
