If this needs to be merged, I apologize. But I have a specific question, and I was hoping somebody on here might know the answer. I haven't seen it elsewhere.

Is the attrition we are having a numbers issue and necessary to fit all of our new signees under the 85-scholarship limit? Or, could we fit all of the new players on the roster without any attrition?

In addition to those who signed today, we also have the potential of adding the other Abernathy and Paulk. Any others?

Butch said in his press conference today that he is looking forward to adding more guys to the roster. I would assume there have to be some blue and gray shirt candidates for him to say that.

As for specifically who falls under those categories, I don't know if any of us knows.

It's a competition thing. Brought in a bunch of good recruits last year and this year. Players are able to read the writing on the wall about playing time and choose to leave.

In the end, it usually works out best for the player and the team as Tennessee will continue to sign talent.

The initial qualifier cap is more the issue than the 85 cap.

25 initial qualifiers can be brought in each signing class.

If a program didn't have 25 initial qualifiers last year then they can backcount scholarships toward the previous year's cap.

Blueshirting is a situation where you "forward count" an athlete; they aren't allowed an official visit to the school nor are they allowed in home coaching visits. Important to note that those kids will count against your initial qualifiers they just will count against the next year's class. They generally go on scholarship in the fall.

Initial qualifiers are for any student athlete that goes on scholarship during the first two years they are with a program.

I believe graduate transfers like Ralph David Abernathy count against the 85 but not the 25 initial qualifier.

Hopefully some of that helps.

Well, Sawyers just got booted and it was confirmed Vic and Jenky are urged to move on as well, so we should be good.

Yeah, so any word on Paulk, or will he give it a day just like dropping the DeBord bomb on everyone?

To add some general perspective on the attrition that is required.

General Example: If the total scholarship limit is 85, and each class can generally sign 25, then each recruiting class must lose about 4 scholarship players from year 1 to 2 in order to stay under the cap on schollies.

I wondered about this myself. After looking thru the roster it seems that we have 68 on scholarship right now including the 10 ees. I figured 5 or so will leave, since looking Mike Sawyers, Jenkins, and Wharton are confirmed. So down to 65. We signed 17 today and with the addition of 2 blue shirts that should give us 84 total currently . I expect us to lose and add a few more but it seems we're good on the 85. Just not sure how we fit the 27 we signed since I thought we could only take 25.

Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for. So, even with these three leaving, we are floating around the limit.

If Abernathy and Paulk are brought into the fold, then it takes care of some of the depth issues at RB, too.

And that is if you have normal sized classes of 25. When you have 32 like we had last year, you need even more.

Paulk isn't coming back.

Abernathy is going to be more of a special teams contributor than a player that will give you significant time at RB.

Probably see a much smaller class next year. Jones has been using every space he can and then some to turn over the roster and get his players in.

The way I understand it is of they blue shirt they can't sign a LOI. We have 27 that signed a LOI. How do we get more than 25? I ask bc I was under the impression we couldn't back count any.
