Quarterly Assessment: Main takeaways from the SEC East | Saturday Down South

"Tennessee has no clue what they are trying to accomplish on offense: Last weekend was the perfect example against Akron. The Vols came out against an out-talented Akron team and ran Rajion Neal for a gain of seven yards on the first play. The Vols then ran play-action off the run for an incompletion. On 3rd and three, the Vols then threw another pass that gets picked off and returned for a touchdown. Why not run the ball down Akron’s throats the first drive and prove a point, “We’re here to dominate you”? But no, Tennessee is just happy to be playing football with some explosive skill players on offense. Running the football with Tyler Bray in the shotgun makes no sense to me. Run the ball under center, please, and try to find an identity of toughness while you’re at it, Jim Chaney. They looked like they were going to put it on Florida in the first half, and when they got down in the second half, they quit. This team is head scratching. They have all the talent in the world on offense, but it looks like their leadership doesn’t give a damn around there. Cordarrelle Patterson hasn’t had enough touches the last two games, and running back Marlin Lane must be in the doghouse."

On one hand you half those who want to pound the rock and on the other half you have the group that wants the ball in our best play makers hands. All this team needs is 150 yards from the 3 backs combined. We just need some type of running game to take a small amount of the pressure off Bary and our talented WRs.

Yes, exactly. I think 100-120 yards per game will be just enough to keep them honest.

This is almost word for word the same thing ainge has said on his show since the florida loss, and i have to agree. Put bray under center, pound the rock, play action off that. With our athletes and brays arm we could still throw for 300+, but on 25-30 attempts instead of 40-50. We are doing too much on offense. We need to pick an identity and stick with it.

Btw, everything i just said ainge also said. Hes pretty smart. Wish he could be a GA or something and take qbs.

If dooley survives this year i think he needs to make a change at oc.

Actually I don't agree with some of that. First off....we have some clue what we're doing on offense. We scored 47 points in this game that he is reviewing. Our D doesn't have a clue but we'll save that for another day. We are not tough. But you don't just get tough. But we call score a lot of points on a lot of teams. Poorly written article IMHO.

Finally!!! This is spot freaking on!! Chaney is lost. Our offense is what runs our team. If we are making stupid play calling decisions the players will know it and get frustrated this will weigh on the defense and frustrate them and then we start crashing. It all starts on offense with our team that's what move this train or doesn't.

It's freaking Akron. No one said we can't score but against Georgia Florida Bama hell almost anyone in SEC that won't fly with quick three and outs they WILL score and we will fall behind and panic and abandon the game plan. Remember it was tied at Half with Akron what if they come out score quick we go three and out an they score again!?

We just hang 47 on Bama.....simple as that. We can't change what we do well. Play to your strength. Got to dance with the girl we brought.

That line of thinking is what cost LSU the NC game last year. They decided to become an option team in five weeks. Don't work that way. You are what you are.

True but if we have a few dumb series get off the field quick the other team will capitalize. I agree 100% we are offensive driven and that feeds the D but like the article reads, these crazy play calls have and will cost us. We won't be able to hang 47 on Bama or anyone when we go three and out quick and allow big plays on D like we did against Florida and Akron. Our offense runs our train. Saying put 47 on them is easy doing it is another.

I think it's a pretty fair assessment. Things may change-- and they better-- but our inconsistency and playcalling are headscratching. I hope we see the good UT this weekend. I've seen enough of the bad UT to last me all season.
