What effect if any will Malik Zaire have on the FL game this year? Understand there are academic issues to be settled but sounds like it is a done deal.

On the one hand, Zaire couldn't even win the starting QB job on a Notre Dame team that went 4-8.

On the other hand, back when he was a sophomore, Zaire led the Irish to a bowl win over #23 LSU, and was the game's MVP.

So he might be good. Or he might be bleh. Kinda hard to tell when he played very little in his four seasons as an undergrad (0 games as a freshman, 2 as a sophomore, 2 as a junior, and about 0.5 as a senior).

The SEC has done everything they could to get Florida as good as possible. We will still beat them.

So he's definitely not sitting out a season?

If he has problems with grades, then he could also have problems learning an offense on short notice. Looks like a dual threat QB though.

At the very least there will be competition; if it gets ugly, then an unexpected transfer could result.

As for LSU game, they seemed to be very unmotivated to play in MCB for a season of high expectations, just like bama being relegated to the Sugar Bowl a few years back and getting whopped on by a lesser but very sound OK team.

Things must be bad in gatortown if you bring a suspect QB in for a one and done season. The guy that could hardly get on the field in South Bend last season is better than all the guys at QB on your roster you recruited??? Thanks for the confidence builder coach ...NOT!!! Lol

The post Tebow curse will live on. It is really amazing to me that a school with a recruiting base like that, with talent abundant everywhere else throughout the roster, hasn't had a QB worth anything for the better part of a decade. And I thought ole yellow teeth was an offensive guru, they haven't exactly burned it up since his arrival, and he's had enough time to show at least some improvement.

He's a graduate transfer so he does not have to sit out a year. There were no academic issues on his part that I'm aware of. He just had to wait until the SEC changed their rule about previous grad transfers failing to qualify at Florida and the resulting penalty to the school.

Thanks Berg. All I saw was academic issues.

Is it a firable offense if Mac loses to Vols for second time in a row? I mean when is the last time a coach lost to us twice in a row there?

See last year's game against Texas A&M...

In another thread they're 40-1 to win SECCG this season and did not win it last season so how'd that work out for them?? If you're a young QB are you going to be recruited by a coach who drags in a one and done guy in front of you rather than developing his own guys who have shown up for years? Me and mine would not.

What does it say about the state of UT football if losing two in a row to the Vols gets your coach fired?

Yeah you won the East two years in a row, but you lost to Tennessee two straight years...time for you to go.

Then again, Zook was all but fired when he mismanaged the clock to allow that Banks Hail Mary TD in 2003.

In the absence of better options, McElwain is our coach in 2018 regardless.

Have a feeling this is putting band-aid on gunshot wound for UF. Their turnstile w/ QB transfers has yielded average results and probably affects team chemistry and ability to recruit QB's. I may be wrong, but think is tough for QB to come in and excel in grasping all the concepts, connection w/ coaches, OL, and WR's. Their offense has been able to hide behind superior D the last few years. Which ever way this plays out, it is probably a non-event for Vols, as long as we've got our act together.

Which part? SEC is the only conference with the rule. Why should a player with eligibility remaining be prevented in transferring to another program? The rule wasn't changed by the SEC without a vote from the coaches.

Trouble with grades.... Then how the h--- can you be a grad student. I say it know and have said it before, leave it to the NCAA to allow this kind of BS just to help make money for themselves and athletic programs. To be more to the point, this guy has only one thing in mind, to PLAY, has no intention of being a person with advanced degrees. (other than football, which his grades in this subject are questionable)

Man, you gotta read the actual article. Or even just all the posts in this thread, where this has already been clarified.

The question was never Zaire's grades. The rule being tweaked took effect because of the grades of OTHER Florida students before Zaire ever considered transferring. Those other students didn't make the grade, so Florida got put on a 3-year suspension from accepting new graduate transfers (which would have blocked Zaire from doing just that). The rule change reduces 3 years of penalty down to 1 year of penalty, opening the door to Zaire transferring in 2017.

Your rant was reminiscent of Rosanna RosannaDanna on Saturday Night Live. :)

It was a dumb rule in the first place and not one that was changed without a vote of the coaches.

I think it was actually a rare situation where SEC was more out in front of an issue than other conferences. The rule was put in place to prevent grad transfers from going to another school and not going to classes. Especially in football, outside of post season, because football is first semester, a guy could flunk out and not go to any classes, and still contribute to a team's success. The guy has his degree, so no penalty for him. I think the rule should stay in place, but then again, SEC doesn't seem to come to VN for judgement on topics.

Pretty sure I answered both of your questions.

Unless the shark's family presses charges, McElwain is our coach in 2018, win or lose against you guys this season.

I also mentioned Ron Zook, who was the last UF coach to lose consecutive games to UT.
