'25 QB transfer prospects (Joey Aguilar)

Feels like we’re down to 2 folks.

think Luke is top option and we are trying to get it done there. If it falls through, looks like a trade with UCLA may happen. Joey concerns me, lots of turnovers, but he has played in a fast tempo system and has a bit of moxy to him.

If it’s Luke, I expect that to be day 1 starter. Joey, I think Merk can push him and it’ll be one of the two.

If its Aguilar he will be the starter. Merklinger has done absolutely nothing to think he would beat him out. He was 40% completion in the spring game. 6/15. So no, I dont wanna ride with Merk, as you all like to say

He probably wins the job but Merk may kill it in fall camp. A spring game is utterly worthless to take anything from

If Aguilar comes in at least you can sell Merk and Mac on, "he's coming in to compete for the job" and you don't risk losing one of them right away, even though that may eventually happen. But you bring Altmyer, they both know he's coming in to start and then you risk maybe one of them leaving sooner rather than later. But, at least then you go get a depth guy, who may actually be easier to find than someone like Altmyer who is somewhat proven.

I think of at the end of the day it's going to be Aguilar. Atmyer isn't even in the portal and sounds like we are talking with Aguilar today, so that may get done fairly soon. Really really really need the BYU WR to come as well. That could really help things.

Guess how many combined receptions the group you just listed has... 36 receptions. Brazzell had 29 and MM had 7. The last four names you mentioned have zero receptions. It could be a great group, but it is completely unknown at this point.
I'm not saying we have an ideal WR room. What we have talent wise is night and day compared to Illinois at that position. If the reason Altmyer is staying put is because of our "WR's", it makes zero sense looking at Illinois's roster. If I was given both rosters to choose from, I'm taking Tennessee's WR group 10/10 times. That narrative doesn't fly, he spurred us because lack of WR's, yet he is content with what Illinois has.

Nico is certainly more talented and I’m bummed it didn’t work out, but to suggest there is no way we could replace his production from last year is silly.

He left likely 10+ touchdowns on the field last year from simply not hitting the open man.
Absolutely. This is the identical story being told when it was Joe and Hooker. People were calling Hooker a noodle arm and a warm body. Potential and a great arm are a small part of being an effective quarterback. Nico clearly has more upside but up till now that’s all it is. I say we give whoever we get a chance. I still think our quarterback production in 2025 exceeds 2024. The bar is low. If Nico wasn’t a 5 star this place would have screamed from the rooftops he should have been benched. Some people need to watch some of last year’s games again and be reminded how average Nico was in actual football games.
