QB quesiton....GT vs UT

I suspect how much the QB is forced to pitch will be dictated by (1) how well the UT DTs/MLB can defend the middle against the dive, and (2) how well UT can set the edges. If UT allows the GT FB to run that dive for 6-8 yds a pop it will be a long night for our defense. But if UT can defend the inside it will force GT outside, which will likely increase the number of pitches considerably, especially if UT can attack the mesh point. Lots of 'its' to be sure, but we are all working with 'ifs' right now.
I get that but GT doesn't always run the triple option. We run midlines, straight Bback dives, rocket tosses, and other plays. If johnson isn't comfortable with guys pitching or they are making mistakes, he will call the game accordingly, so we don't have plays that even require a pitch.

The counter point to that is... you've just become pretty similar to anyone else UT might play. The option is the scary part of your O. It is the novelty. You run the other stuff out of the same formation set... but it compares to what more traditional O's do. You defend it by filling lanes and running to the ball.

Honestly without the option... your O just isn't very scary especially considering you don't pass great.

I don't really agree with that, of course it takes away from our offense. But there are games where the 3o didn't do great but we hit huge plays with other stuff. Also just knowing the 3o could come at anytime opens up other plays for GT. Honestly though I'm not worried about QB, Paul johnson is a straight shooter and he said that's the least of his worries. I get the feeling he's more worried about D. Imo this could be a high scoring game.

The option and high number of pitches makes the GT offense high risk for fumbles. Note they will have a nervous fr QB pitching to nervous back aginst a fast closing D and whatcha out... Our offensive can get 7-7 yards on 3rd, theirs can't. There is a reason few teams still run that offense.

Hard to answer since we run completely different offenses, but I think we are at a disadvantage more than they are.

We rarely see their offense but their defense see's our type of offense more often. So I think overall we are at the bigger disadvantage. As far as QB's go I don't think either one has more of an advantage, they are both "Rookies" at this point.

Disagree, we have more weapons in the passing game and it will be very effective if our OL can get Kelly and Ty going.

There is ONE way GT can win this. I'm hearing consistent reports that our upper class men Oline are soft. It would explain a lot. I'm not in a position to say one way or another. But if UT is going to get beat... that's how.

You must not watch much of GT.....

I watched the first half of your spring game last night. Pressure on your O whether Fr or any other class creates turnover opportunities.

Your D provides a better blueprint for stopping your O than the other games I've watched.

Pressure on any offense creates turnovers. Yes, we have more ball handling going on but our OL is pretty good so I'm not so sure there will be a ton of pressure, but I've been wrong before lol.

Who are your OL starters now and what can you say about their quality and experience? Who would be your next two up?

Our center was the guy who started against VT when Matthew Jordan started at QB. Paul Johnson said he might be his best offensive linemen this year and could be his best center since he's been at GT. Our LG is Parker Braun, freshman all American and was an espn 300 player. I know you guys will hate this but he's crazy good with cut blocks. Our LT is a sophomore, started around 3 or 4 games last year, really athletic and can get to the 2nd level, but had some struggles in the spring, I haven't heard anything on him with the fall. RG is Will Bryan, probably our most experienced linemen he's a junior with 17 starts and 23 games played. I don't think I can say he does anything out of this world but he's just a solid guy all around. He can also slide out to RT. Our RT is a senior, Andrew Marshall but won't play against UT. Jake Stickler will probably take his spot at RT, he was originally pushing the LT for playing time and coach said he played his best in our last scrimmage, but I honestly don't know much of him. Shamire Devine is our 3rd OG and he's huge 6"7 380. Probably our best smash mouth guy and is amazing when we run inside, but he's limited for us because of the outside runs. Brad and Scott Morgan are two other guys who haven't really played but have made strides, word is thy are ready to contribute, but I haven't seen anything yet so take that for what it's worth. Paul Johnson said this OL has the potential to be his best ever at GT. Potential being the key word.

Thanks.

I've been pretty consistent on cut blocks. They're legal and no more dangerous than blocking high unless it turns into a clip.

Chop blocks OTOH should result in a suspension and should be reviewable post-game. The costs to defensive players is just too high not to make that an offense equal to targeting.

Sorry I know a lot hate the cut blocks. I'm glad you understand the truth of them though lol.

We were taught to cut block. I literally never saw someone get injured from a cut block. I did see some guys get concussions from high blind sides.

There are a good many here who have never played a down of competitive football. They've never bled or had their nasal passages cleared by someone hitting them. They've never been so bruised on the morning after game night that everything hurts... even brushing your teeth. The closest they've been to a cut block is Xbox.

Makes sense. I got blind sided on a block once. Ohhhhhhhh what I would do for that to have been a cut block lol.

You have the force the pitch if you want GT to pitch.

Normally the DE takes the FB, the OLB takes the QB, and this forces the pitch to the slot back. The MLB has the slot back, but should be blocked or at the least rerouted. The MLB is slowed if he has to help shore up the middle.

GT's defense has the DE take the FB, the OLB take the slot back (pitch guy), and force the QB to keep the ball. Why? because if the pitch is made and the MLB is blocked, the pitch is going for some serious yards. Making the QB keep, keeps the ball inside where there is help.
