QB Position..

Just elevate the walkon.
Simple.

Play defense. Run the ball with Faizon and the RBs. Scheme Matthews and a Staley touches.

LOL no, it's not that simple.

The QB position is not a position that you can count on a walk on to provide quality snaps, should the guys in front of him get hurt. Not only that, but none of these guys have any experience. There is a legitimate chance that GMac isn't good and that Faizon isn't ready. So a 3rd quality QB is pretty important for 2026. It doesn't have to be an immediate starter type. But it's gotta be someone better than walk on quality.

I don't know Trinidad Chambliss NIL deal but Ole Miss basically got him for a backup and their starter went down early in the season and Trinidad balled and Ole Miss in playoffs & Kiffin made a mint going to LSWHO. Just go get the best you can and let the competition sort it out.

The best True Freshman QB Underwood led Michigan to 9-3. He was inconsistent will be great but this is the best record you could hope for with a True especially with our 26 schedule and it could go bad with a True. Below is Bryce 25 stats screenshot
and he's hit the portal, can't blame him with all that's going on in MI but it's crazy to see so many guys that starters for their team and would be the starter the next season still hitting the portal

This is no way to build a team. There is no guarantee to get an experienced starter every year out of the portal. Highschool kids will see the trend how a team gets someone out of the portal to start over someone coming in and won't ever sign. Very rarely do you get a kid that isn't true freshman that comes in and starts at QB and wins on an elite level. Most know that it takes a year or two to be the starter at a top program. 24 months from now GMAC will be a junior and could declare for draft who knows but I do know getting a starting QB out of the portal is not a guarantee every year and not a way to build a team.
Who are the HS kids going to sign with if all the big boys are hitting the portal for QB's. If they go to a lesser school. They're saving the bigger schools money because they're not paying them, the HS QB will eventually hit the portal from the smaller school looking for more NIL and wanting to play for one of the majors. Eventually these 5* QB's are going to realize that they're likely sitting 2yrs before taking over

Spending $4M for a one year QB seems like a waste of money to me because we aren’t going to win a natty until the defense gets fixed. I’d buy a budget QB who would provide legitimate competition to Gmac and Faizon and let the best man win. Focus resources toward impact defenders. When we have a top 10 defense, then you go get an elite QB if there isn’t one already on the roster.
And it is not just 4 million on a one year guy. We had to pay Brandon starter pay to get him to commit and to keep G-Mac we are going to have to pay him. If we bring in a one year guy I believe we will be in the 8-10 million range to keep all three.

It’s not complicated. If we bring someone in it’s with the thought that they can compete for that job.

I agree. I’d love to see us starting some HS recruited, developed talent. But coaches get paid to win now whether it’s with a portal QB or a HS recruit. That’s the bottom line.

I will always believe Joey was told, wink wink, he would be the starting QB when brought in. Publically he would compete for the job. If they bring in an experience QB again this yr it will be he same situation. They would have to show badly in spring practice to not get the starting job.

But agree I think its time to go with a HS recruited QB or risk losing the ability to recruit them. Its a tough spot for Heuple with the win now pressure.

Basilio posted these stats on his blog yesterday:
7 starting QB’s in playoffs are transfers
7 or 8 of the last Heisman winners were also transfers

5 of the QBs in playoffs this year were original recruits

Keller Chryst came here from Stanford probably Jeremy Pruitt paid him a bag, his dad was a Head Coach at Wisconsin at one time and he couldn't beat out Guarantano. So some plans don't work out Chryst was a 5 star out of HS but thinking the new environment at UT would bring that 5 Star out never materialized , he rode the PINE.
Appreciate you cherry picking someone that has 0 to do with now, completely different staff, and completely different landscape of portal era football. If we go pay millions for an experienced portal QB, it’s because he’s in the mix of starting. Telling yourself anything else is just silly.

You do realize Chryst was 2018, and legal NIL payments started 2025? The situation you mention in 0 way shape or form are relatable. Filling a roster spot with a transfer QB in 2018 and going out in 2026 and paying 2-4 mil for a portal QB are two different worlds.

3 of those 5 original QBs are at Ohio St, Georgia and Bama, all of whom typically lead the country in recruiting each year and regularly sign 5** players

That's fine though. We are not going to win 11+ games until after we get the defense fixed. 9-3 with an improving defense and an experienced Faizon with Staley, Matthews, and Keys returning would be a good spot to be in for 2027. With as bad as defense was this year and after hiring a DC who's system takes a while to get the hang of, I just don't think there's a 1 year fix available. And I'm cool with it. Just show me we're moving in the right direction.

Get the absolute best guy we can get/afford. One thing the Nico situation taught me is you can pay a kid, coddle him, set him up in perfect situation, get receivers from high school and portal, linemen from HS and portal and they will STILL leave if it behooves them.

Its a business, get best option available to help you win NOW. If young guys leave, well adios.

If Joey comes back, roll with Joey.

If not, I would like to see GMac start and add a depth QB. Just because he's already one of us and I want him to succeed here.

But I'm not a QB coach, so if he isn't ready or doesn't put on some good weight, go find somebody for a year.

Seriously, eat cheeseburger kid; dude looks like a baby gazelle running around out there.

Its not cherry picking a Grad transfer which had immediate eligibility, no 1 year sit out has a relevance. The closet thing to the new NIL era everybody is immediate eligible. Bottom line is they are making these moves in pre Spring to try to win the next season doesn't matter what era. Coaches at top P4 programs wont last especially if they don't get their team into the 12 team playoff at least every 3 to 5 years. If you go out and get a QB that has 1 year left you are hoping for a plug and play no matter if it was a Grad instant transfer eligibility QB or a modern day instant portal no sit out. It is for immediate needs no matter the era so it does relate.

Ok Merk is out as he is locked behind George and Joey. So if Joey doesn’t return and we go out and pay for a new signal caller what happens if hypothetically speaking George turns and says see ya. What so we are going to pay top dollar for two? We don’t know what has been told to George. About his future especially now with faizon arriving soon.
Merk in the times we saw him looked like he wasn’t ever going to be an SEC QB. Idk what you get via the portal or Joey’s appeal but I’ve got a pretty good idea what you had with Merk and that wasn’t good enough

I’m not real sure what you’re arguing at this point. I’m not sure you are either. So you’re trying to convince me that Heupel and co. Are going to the portal to find a desirable QB, which will cost millions, all with the expectations he’s going to ride the bench in 2026?

Interesting.
