QB of the future

I realize it's off week and there's not alot to be positive about when thinking about the immediate future of the program, but I have a few thoughts and more importantly, some questions for volnation.

Regardless of what coaches spew to the media about the QB position being "just one" position and surrounding them with great support can lead to success...... They know what we all know... There are very few championship caliber teams that dont at least have good QB play...In fact, it most always requires great QB play..I know we agree our QB play has been pretty bad.....IMO, I believe, regardless of what else happens this year or what anyones opinions are of him, JG will use his last year of eligibility somewhere else.

It seems as if we have an elite blue chipper committed in the Bailey kid from Marietta....He has the build and arm talent of someone who might be an NFL QB one day.....He'll be a true freshman next season when Grad transfer Kasim Hill competes for the starting job. Hill led Maryland to an enormous upset of Texas last season....and of course Mauer, who looks like a great competitor, but to me he looks really really tiny out there....I like him, just not sure if hes SEC caliber...I'm hoping we see soon : )

My questions are:

Shouldn't TN be an attractive place for another grad transfer to give Bailey a year? Perhaps one that's really good? Shouldn't the best graduate non SEC QB from a struggling power 5 program be our QB next season?

Do we see Bailey starting as a true freshman? I'm sure immediate playing time is attractive to him as well as a grad transfer.......

Pruitt may or may not be the answer. But it would be alot more clear if we had a good QB

The problem with a really, really good QB transferring to a program in the shape ours is in are not very good. These guys want to go where they have a chance to shine. Not the case here. One example, where did Hurt go? One of the best teams around. Makes him a true Heisman prospect. Think that could happen here?

Bo Nix, Casey Clausen, Tua, Ainge/Schaeffer ......but yes it’s a tall order to ask a True Freshman to start

You fail to point out that all these guys had pretty good teams to play on. Not a team trying to be built from scratch.

Got him up from 193 to 202. Hell... he may be 207 by now. That was around spring I heard 202.
You forgot to look at the post that I was replying to. It said that he was already up to 202 lbs. GO VOLS!

Well that’s obviously just your personal view. It’s cool, but Every one of these kids are measured in every way a person can be measured. I know for a fact I’m personally 5’10. Standing next to Brian Maurer I come up to his shoulder.

I’m not taking it as a knock on him btw. But I would however suggest you never build anything because a foot is obviously around 18 inches to you. 😂. (Just poking fun at ya)

Maybe he'll grow if I really want him to....This is probably a bad angle....My wife says I lie about size too....lol

Why do you think college players usually shrink 2 inches when getting measured at the NFL combine? Again, I know we're splitting hairs over something insignificant.....Point is, he looks very small when I watch him, but he's a freshman....He'll grow

As much as I hate to say it, it looks like we’ll still have very serious trouble at the QB position next year.

True but to hear everyone on here tell it a TF should never be able to play well. I also don’t believe we’re as bad as our record but between crap QB play and even worse coaching we are where we are.

All the guys you mentioned had a much better supporting cast 🙄

Maybe, but I don’t believe we’re as bad as our record would indicate.

Coming into this year the OLine was a question mark but I think a lot of us agreed if they could give JG time we’d have a good offense with Chaney calling plays.

Instead we got crap QB play and even worse coaching. So no I don’t buy that one of our TF couldn’t have done better than what we’ve seen so far.

It seems as if Pruitt put all his eggs in the JG basket and then the basket broke, and he had no backup plan.

When you say “beat down” it sounds like you’re talking about the scoreboard but what people would be concerned about is the beat down that MAUER would receive and how that would affect his confidence.

That’s why as a coach you let him know to not worry about doing too much, and take what the defense gives you. If we lose then we lose but just do your best and use this a learning experience.

There should be no reasoning his confidence would be affected if his coaches do their jobs correctly.

Heck no they’re not as bad as the record indicates, but they’re still bad...... and agree that the QB play has been atrocious

We brought in transfer QB Hill from Maryland who will be eligible next year. So, we don’t need to trade a 4 year player for a 1 year grad transfer, especially given how that panned out for us last year with Keller Chryst and Madre London.

So, you named 4 QBs over the last 15 years among 130 D1 teams. Helluva list you got there.

Point is, you can name 50 more if you want, it still doesn’t change the ironclad fact that it’s very difficult for a true freshman to step in and play QB at this level. Heck, you shouldn’t have to go any further than looking at how Maurer has played the last 2 games....he’s struggled mightily.

No, no, no, and no.

It is a tall order to ask a Freshman, even a spectacularly talented one, to come in and start as QB. It's even tougher to expect them to be successful and excel.
It is.

But QBs are better prepared now than they used to be. Early enrollment has helped that a lot. Most of the ones that excell have good pieces around them.

That’s definitely a bad angle for what we’re talking about. Actually hurts my case tbh. 😂. But IN that picture it included his height and weight. While it looks false knowing that Wanya and Trey are both 6’5-6’6 , You would think “There’s no way BM is 6’3.” But one thing we can all agree on is we don’t have a single player on the roster 6’8-6’9, which would appear to be the size difference in that particular picture. So yes, just a bad angle.

It’s not a big deal one way or another. I just know for a fact that I’m personally 5’10. His HS coaches, the elite 11, UT and other teams that he camped at all measured him and all came up with between 6’3- 6’4. And I come up to the top of his shoulder.

Anybody watching MSU and AU? Two true freshman QBs facing off in the SEC. Also true freshman Howell at UNC nearly beat Clemson and Justin Fields starts for tOSU tonight. What has been true about freshman QBs historically not being able to start and compete is quickly changing.

If another Jalen Hurts is in the portal or any quality QB, we need to pursue it with everything we have.

With Jake Bentley losing this season because of injury and being replaced by the freshman, he might be looking for a new spot to play next year.Oklahoma will probably grab him.

You think he gets the nod next Saturday when GA runs away with it or before things get too bad?
