QB Joey Aguilar commits to UT from portal

Your snarky comment doesn't change the facts.

Fact #1. We have no proven playmakers at the WR position.

Fact #2. Not having any proven playmakers prohibited us from landing a better QB in the portal.
And yet, the coaching staff stands pat year after year. Let's be real. There are a couple of positions that have been chronic weaknesses in terms of talent, evals, development...whatever. That's on the position coach and Heupel. I'm a believer in stability and consistency, but at this point in the Heupel era, I think it's reasonable to begin to question some things?

How are we figuring there will be a QB competition? We gave him 1.2 mil, I don't see him sitting
I think we gave 1.2 mil because at this point of the calendar - there was not any choice. I don't think you can't get an experienced qb this time of the year for any less. At least not one you want playing the position at a high caliber SEC school. I have no idea what UT is thinking - but, I'd think of it like this - I pay 1.2 mil for qb I feel I could trust in a game, I'm saving a mil over my former qb - so I have some money left to sure another position or two, we coach them all up over the next few months, throw all three qb's out there in the Spring and see what happens. The best man wins. Joey isn't going anywhere else. You might have to pony up some more NIL money if one of the other two win the starting position and play well. Just let itself play out and see what happens.

I do feel like he's going to surprise us in a good way but he's not our Savior. He's going to be a serviceable guy that shows some magic every once in a while. If he had a full spring and fall camp with the team, I would feel a lot better about the situation. He's not a bad pick up. just bad timing.
He's a transitional placeholder for Faizon Brandon or whoever wins the QB1 job. He could be good/better than most expect, or he could be worse. I don't really care as long as Tennessee puts the kid out there who gives us the best chance to succeed.

I don't stick my neck out often, but my guess is Faizon's $$$ deal is huge and he will have those expectations on his shoulders when he steps on campus. The question will be how long it takes him to develop into QB1.

Aguilar has one year left officially, but he could be available for 2 more years due to his year of Juco, like Diego Pavia at Vandy. So if he entrenches himself as the starter and performs above whatever expectations we have going into the season, then we would have a senior QB in 2026 with 3 underclassmen heading into spring camp (assuming Brandon stays with us). That's probably the best case scenario where this kid is good enough to win and we find out the heir apparent out of those 3.

That was supposed to be the plan anyway. Merklinger was never meant to be thrown into a starting role as a RS Freshman. He wasn't as developed or polished as Nico was at this point last year, and it showed during his mopup duty. What little we've seen of him hasn't made me think, "That's definitely the next QB1 at Tennessee," but that doesn't mean he can't develop into the role. He's a kid who could develop into a good starting QB in the SEC after a few years.

Mac just needs to put on some weight (but we say that about a lot of our young QBs: Bray, Dobbs, Nico... all looked like they were going to get broken in half when they were 1st or 2nd year players. Even going back as far as Peyton, he was tiny before a year in the weight room).

In the grand scheme of life, we can now focus all of our attention looking forward. The past is behind us and we have 3 excellent QBs that would give their left nut to be named our starting QB this Fall. Let's support them, the coaches and the staff and keep our eyes looking though the windshield.

So you think that Jake and Gmac signed at UT for LESS money per year than Nico? Maybe. But half as much? I bet you both Jake and Gmac are making at least the $1.2M this year that JA is making. He may well be the lowest paid QB on roster at $1.2M per year....both Jake and Gmac were Elite 11 QBs in HS. Just like Nico.

Remember team nico - he was a redshirt frosh too and did “ok” this past season….
He had also played in 4 games the previous year and started the bowl game. Also went through Spring Practice and the off-season as the starting QB. Merk didn't get that.
