QB Joey Aguilar commits to UT from portal

Think we got both the sunshine pumpers and the negavols going wild here.

We don’t even know if he’s a starter, he’d be a great backup, possibly a workable starter. But regardless he makes the QB room better.

I understand he’s not Nico but it’s not doomsday either.

So you need to be a junior at UT before you have the experience to start? Experience comes from playing, and imo get the experience this year or else we have an inexperienced qb for next year. And if it turned out he was really good, you have him for only one year, because he will hit the NFL draft
You’re what your experience is. He’s primed to play and develop at a more natural rate…not under the gun. Maybe he wrests the job away before the season or by mid-season. Nothing’s impossible. But it’ll be EARNED. Saying he’s a sophomore with the scant snaps he took last year in real game speed is bending the rules of reality to justify an argument.

Actually that is exactly what I am saying or trying to. I would be willing to take a hit this year for a better qb for the next year. By not playing this year, he will not get very much experience. And the portal guy will be gone after this year. I will just have to trust Hype on this one, he knows much more about what we have than I do.

Looking at it this way he could be a senior with no game time and still be a freshman
You’re just mouth arguing with your fingers in your ear at this point. 😏 No one claimed Milton was a sophomore in his second year ATTENDING Michigan. Now you go through four offseasons with the same program, you’re more a senior than a redshirt junior…but that’s a longer journey. Point is, every game experience Merk experience will be a FIRST. He was just handing off or making routine dump off passes in garbage time against FCS programs last season.

I know I'll get hammered for this take by some but I like a gunslinger. He may turn it over some but you always feel you got a shot when he's out there. Favre would get erratic at times but the Super Bowl win over the Patriots made it worth it. Who knows? Aguilar (if the starter) may give the Vols that same kind of hope. I like guts and moxie. Throw that sucker in a tight window. Don't play scared. Believe you can make every throw. Vols by fiddy! 😉

You got nothing to lose…unlike the HC. Doubt White would give him a pass if we have a five win season due to him following message board advice.

Erry time we played a plucky guy who had his smaller program way too close, some of these same guys would be pining for him.

I mean, I kinda agree. I obviously don’t want him to be careless back there, but Hooker was the last one to just let it fly and give the WR a chance. Before then, it’s hard to remember the last one to do that.

I agree we needed a back up, but don't think we needed a starter. Or else Hype has mis evaluated our two qb on the roster now.
You don’t recruit a backup to do that job with no possibility of them starting. We had that with Gaston Moore. Best to have someone CAPABLE of being the guy and your other scholarship QBs outperforming them. Arch Manning is in his first season as the undisputed starter. What went wrong for him and Sarkisian’s evaluation?

I don't want to call out any particular previous QB but I just want to see 50/50 balls that our receivers actually have a chance to catch. I'm tired of airing out balls 20 yards over their heads.

Sark made a mistake, Arch was much better than Ewers, not the first time good coaches mis judged a players potential. This year will tell if I am wrong or not.

Sounds like an opinion. One I agree with but their HC didn’t. Once again, he can’t go on message board “facts” and “should’ves”. He’s made the playoffs two seasons in a row with his wrong takes.

Everything has been screwed up since they shot that gorilla. Timeline went off the rails.
🤣🤣🤣
"Dad, tell me about 2016."
Dad freezes...his eyes get real big...runs to the liquor cabinet, takes 3 huge gulps of tequila.
His hands shaking, he wipes his brow and says:
"Well son, it all started with this F#%@!$g gorilla..."

Merk is not a freshman

Pretty sure he redshirted last year? Hes a RS freshman correct? Regardless, Jake is likely the starter game 1 IMO. People forget he was an Elite 11 QB in HS just like Nico and Gmac. If Gmac was from any state besides TN...everyone on this board would be pulling hard for Jake and expecting Gmac to sit his entire freshman season and redshirt. Just like Nico and Jake did their freshman years. Coach Hype hand picked Jake from all the QBs in HS....just like he did with Nico, and Gmac. Kid was Elite 11...just like Nico, and Gmac. He has a full year in the system, in practice, and in the UT strength and conditioning program that George's 18yo 6ft6in 190lb stringbean ass doesnt have. I hope Gmac has an incredible career at UT...hope he is the next Peyton. I am not delusional enough to think he is gonna beat out Jake who is bigger, stronger, faster, older, and more experienced just because he grew up in TN. Btw...Halze is changing Gmacs throwing motion as we speak. Just like he did Jakes last season. Changed Jakes grip on the ball, and his mechanics. It would be an absolute miracle if George beat out Jake for QB1 this fall. It would also mean that CJH failed in that the QB which he hand picked to come behind Nico wasnt good enough to start after a full year in the program and got beat out by a skinny true freshman. Count me on the side that says there's no way in Hades that happens in 2025.

Say what you want to believe....If he was their guy they wouldn't have gone after Nico. They didn't take Nico to be the backup. Nico has 2 years under his belt with a playoff team to boot from the SEC. The APP State QB was left out in the cold.
UCLA has or had 7 QBs on their roster this spring so someone was gonna be left in the cold. When they see that Nico thinks he is still playing flag football they will see what any vol fan seen in Nico. Stat packer against UTC ect and then goes out and is a no show against teams like Arkansas ect and throwing for 100 yards against legit competition.

SIAP. Have no idea if he will good or if he even wins the starting job. If he does, I bet he doesn’t run out of bounds on 4th down. So that would be something we haven’t seen the last two years. Just saying.

Lmao. Thats hilarious because its true. How can the QB not know the down/distance??? Maybe intelligence isnt that high up on CJH list of important attributes in his QBs? 😆

From what little I've heard Jake has a long way to go to be ready. And even Kevin Simon said after he watched practice that in his opinion he's at least a yr away from being ready and that if he started the season at number 1 he expects George to jump him after a few games. That was last week before we picked up the new QB. Hearing Kevin say that doesn't give me a lot of hope for Jake being the answer next yr.
