QB Joey Aguilar commits to UT from portal

I think Joey will fit in good with our offense, but I am excited to see how Merk and Mac progress through the summer and fall. I still think both of them have a great chance to be quality quarterbacks. I think Mac’s upside is is pretty high. It’s going to take a total team effort this year, but I am interested to see what type of fight this group has. The cupboard isn’t bare. Lots of young talent that should be ready to shine. This team does have potential if we can just put it all together and stay healthy. Hopefully this team wants to prove we have a new standard here at UT. Maybe we develop that chip on our shoulder and galvanize as a true hard nosed team. GBO!

Just watched Aguilar's game vs Clemson in 2024, and yikes! Risky throws, overthrows, underthrows, INT, not much running... How is this a fit?

He seems very limited with his throwing motion. Not much touch on his throws. I don't see him lobbing or placing the ball much. Alot of batted down passes. Tries to thread the needle in the middle portion of the field with not much success. Missed more the a couple short passes. Isn't a statue, but don't see him as mobile. Not sure he has much of a deep ball.

The best compliment I can give him is that he at least keeps his eyes downfield and survey's the field calmly. Also, he gets rid of the ball quickly and doesn't take unecessary sacks. Maybe a little better protection and better scheming where wide receivers are more open can make a big difference. But ultimately I see him with limited upside. But at least has the experience to step in and operate the offense if the freshman QBs aren't ready..

hopefully just a backup for gmac
Why would he come here, unless he has a guarantee to start, If he is recruited for a back up I am all for it. But imo he is coming to be the starter without taking the first snap regardless of how Merk and Mac perform. I am all UT Vols fan and just hope Hype is right.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. We are likely the best option at this time of year in terms of being able to offer a real opportunity to start and provide good NIL pay. Most other teams at the P4 level have their guy or are happy enough with their QB room that they wouldn't offer what we can offer in pay to Aguilar.

But yeah, I'd still bet on him to take the 1st snap just becuase he actually has starting experience. But I doubt Heupel made any promises to him to start. There is no need to do that either. Let the QB competition commence..

Heupel trusted a redshirt freshman at Qb this past season. Hmmmmmm
One that expected to start and was one of the highest rated prospects in the country. Merk wasn’t expecting to start and he wasn’t one of the highest rated prospects coming out of high school but he may end up being the best qb when all is said and done.

Yea I don’t know how to feel about this. Any added competition is good. However I’m envisioning a scenario where Aguilar doesn’t separate himself in the QB competition but is given the starting job anyway, underperforms and players get pissed and leave.
I am thinking the same thing.

Aguilar will start in Atlanta vs Syracuse you just can't start a freshman in a neutral field P4 game to start the season, remember Nate Peterman. I'd almost bet big money he's played a lot of games vs P4 teams at App. I think one of them will play 4 games next season and they will get a chance the 2nd game vs ETSU then we have UGA. After that Gmac or Merk may get some play versus UAB. By this time, they will know whether to go with the portal guy or go all out young. Josh passed on the Notre Dame QB so I think he sees something in Aguilar he likes.
Merk is not a freshman

I’d be miserable if I deluded myself into thinking it’s BETTER to go into the season with only two freshmen with zero college starting experience instead of UCLA’s projected starter this time last week. Spared myself.

Lots of folks down about the high number of INTs...I say that goes two ways.

High number means he isn't scared to take the shot downfield if he thinks it's there in my book.

I agree we needed a back up, but don't think we needed a starter. Or else Hype has mis evaluated our two qb on the roster now.

In experience he is.
So you need to be a junior at UT before you have the experience to start? Experience comes from playing, and imo get the experience this year or else we have an inexperienced qb for next year. And if it turned out he was really good, you have him for only one year, because he will hit the NFL draft
