QB Joey Aguilar commits to UT from portal

Where did I say he got us to the playoffs? He was the starting QB on a playoff team. Anyone knows as a RS freshman he wasn't that good....but the fact is we got to the playoffs. And you think a APP State QB with 24 INTs is going to come in and be the day 1 starter at an SEC program. Give it up yourself.
Anyone with eyeballs knows our D and run game got us into those playoffs. Neither one of us can tell the future. How do those INTs change with a more competent team around him? Who knows? All I know is Nico wasn’t a world beater last year and it won’t take much to get comparable production out of another QB. Nico’s stats were padded by cupcakes and he struggled angainst any team of caliber.

Yea I don’t know how to feel about this. Any added competition is good. However I’m envisioning a scenario where Aguilar doesn’t separate himself in the QB competition but is given the starting job anyway, underperforms and players get pissed and leave.

Just skimming through Aguilar's available YouTube stuff, my gut tells me we're running with Merk in game 1.

Unless Aguilar just "clicks" with Heupel's system and our receiving crew, I think he'll take a bit (not a knock on him, he's coming in late) to get into the offense.

What some have mentioned as "quick decision making" looks a bit like "I'm throwing to the primary read no matter what" to me, but that may be not trusting his line to hold. Heupel has seen a lot more film, I'm sure, than me and can understand what's happening a lot better.

Forced..... is the word that comes to mind.

my opinion is this is a depth/competition move. If he’s good enough to start, great. If not, we needed a third qb anyway.

Is it your "gut" telling you or are you relying on your years of college coaching and talent evaluating? 🤔
Don’t know about him, but I have coached us to so many great victories from in front of the tv and inside Neyland Stadium that I can’t BELIEVE my mugshot isn’t plastered all over that stadium. Been working on my poses, just for when they call.

One thing for sure is Syracuse defense doesn't have a lot of tape to prepare for that game

We really couldn't convince one of the Big 12 Qbs to come here? This is a huge L in my opinion. Only saving grace really is if we are able to used the saved NIL money elsewhere on the roster. But we have already lost our swing Tackle, and some defensive depth pieces. And we really didn't add much in the transfer portal to begin with. I'm really struggling to see the vision this year. My best hope is G-Mac, who looked good in the O&W, eventually wins the starting role and the offense clicks again.

I don’t think Merk is going to win the starting job. This kid is coming in to start. I do think Merk will eventually be a good qb. I don’t think Heupel was ready to trust a red shirt freshman at Gainesville or Tuscaloosa this year. Aguilar has started games against high level competition.
Heupel trusted a redshirt freshman at Qb this past season. Hmmmmmm

I’ll take “Reserving Judgement till I See Something” for $500, Alex. Nobody knows anything till a starter is named after fall practice. Hell, it’s 50/50 any of us wake up tomorrow and our car starts.
