QB decision coming soon?

Why is it so impossible to think that Crompton may actually play better this year?

.... Erik Ainge, 2005 at LSU, the infamous underhanded sling from the back of the endzone. .

That was FAR worse than anything Crompton or any of UT's QB's did last year. Ainge was a basket case and I remember making almost the EXACT same arguments about him being hopeless that many are making about JC. Cut broke Ainge down then built him back up... almost the exact same thing CLK has done with JC and to a lesser extent Stephens.

That's why I'm hoping for the best without allowing myself to make an assumption for good or bad.

Crompton will be named starter next Monday. He's going to be asked to manage the game. CLK just wants him to make his reads and not turn the ball over.

There's nothing wrong with that as long as the coaching staff realizes it. Unfortunately, it took 10 games before the ex-coaching staff did last year.

The ex-coaching staff Sucked!!! Fulmer won on the talent that was here and that was all. We were fair when cutcliffe was OC.But the years he wasn't , the record tells all .:eek:k:

While it is correct that this is not last season, Crompton's completion percentage has been eerily similar to last year in the scrimmages, and that is flat out atrocious. The fumbled snaps and sacks sound pretty familiar too.

:eek:hmy: A top 5 defense could effect passing percentage. It might even get a sack or two.:)

Anyone remember David Leaverton at UCLA in 1997? That was the worst choke job I've ever seen... he had absolutely 0% confidence, scared ****eless. Erik Ainge, 2005 at LSU, the infamous underhanded sling from the back of the endzone. Both of those guys went on to be very solid, productive players because they responded to the right coaching.

Will Reaves, Chaney, Kiffin provide the coaching to snap Crompton into form? I don't know... but its certainly not out of the realm of possible. Odds are pretty good that he will play better this year. I'm not expecting a world beater, but I think he'll be an average, servicable SEC QB.

Well stated. Let's hope we see an Ainge type of turnaround this year with Crompton.

...and then let's hope that we don't have to hope for this kind of miracle turnaround in QB play for a LONG time.

This is not a fair statement until we see these guys play under the new system. These first few games will tell us alot. If our QB (whoever is playing) does reasonably well, we'll know that joker Clawson was to blame for much of our offensive woes last year. On the flip side, if we still can't move the ball, it may be that Crompton & Stephens actually are not that good....

Clawson didn't throw a single pass into the ground or into the stands last year, and he didn't fumble a single snap or make a bad handoff to a running back either.

Wrong. That was one insanely stupid mistake. Crompton's stupid decision-making and constant inability to throw an accurate pass cost us many games against atrocious opponents.

It is hard to make all your reads when your offensive line is confused and dont give you time to do a 3 step drop. If Ainge can turn himself into a serviceable QB then I believe CLK and crew can salvage Crompton! Stephens can have next year all to himself.

Double gag,,,, you cannot seriously not blame the architect of the 115th ranked offense in D1? The OC is the engineer that runs the train. This was by far the worst offense Tennessee has put on the feild since maybe they were a club team sometime before JC walked the earth.

I've been watchin' the Vandy and UK games from last year by no means was crompton great but he seemed to be getting a little more consistant than the earlier game (auburn) maybe there's hope with new coaching:crossfingers:

If Stephens is going to be our starter next year , then why not start him this year to get a years experience going into his Senior year ? If Crompton and Stephens are neck and neck in competition , then why not start Stephens ? I dont think one has stood out above the other one in practice .

Crompton has done better than Stephens in practice and scrimmages. That is why he continues to work with the first team and will likely get the nod in a few days.

If Crompton is obviously pulling ahead in competition they should start him .If they are identical in practice then I would start Stephens . Either way I beleive Crompton will probably be the guy

I have to say that a part of me really wants Crompton to get the job and get it done....kid went through a lot last year on the field and off (with our fans treating him like Columbian soccer fans would and all)
