On ESPN College Football Rumors. SIAP. Didn't see it

UPDATE: Not only could you argue that the quarterback position is uncertain for 2011, but there might be a battle brewing for 2012, too.

Early enrollee Justin Worley (Rock Hill, S.C.) looked every bit the part of a future SEC starter backing up rising senior Matt Simms on the winning White team during the Vols spring game Saturday. Other than Simms, Worley by far outshone the three other back-ups, completing six passes for 58 yards and reportedly threw several on target that were dropped. One reporter is rumored to have yelled, "What an arm on that kid!" in the press box.

Derek Dooley told reporters that redshirt decisions aren't made until halfway through the season, but if Worley were to enter next spring with four years of eligibility remaining, we're certain he would at least have a shot at unseating Tyler Bray.

...

Rising sophomore QB Tyler Bray hasn't exactly been lights out this spring, and he was a miserable 5-for-30, albeit for 122 yards and a TD, in Saturday's spring game. But coach Derek Dooley says that Bray's starting job is not in the least bit of danger.

"If Tyler would've gone 27-of-30 for 300 yards, I would've said, 'Yeah, we're doing good,'" Dooley said. "If he would've gone 5-for-30, which is what he did, I would've said, 'It's just a spring game. It doesn't matter.'"

Rising senior backup Matt Simms was a tad more efficient, completing six of 13 passes for 93 yards and a score, running for another TD and even catching an 18-yard pass as he led his team to victory. But Simms remains insurance, not the No. 1 option. "He's going to have to go in next year at some point and win us a football game," Dooley said.

Even though Bray said that had the spring game been a final exam, he "would've had to retake that class," teammates also still have his back. "Tyler knows what he can do," rising sophomore WR Matt Milton said. "We know what Tyler can do, and the spring game isn't going to change it."

Sounds like the players have confidence in Tyler. Good enough for me.

Probably not good enough for a lot of "glass half-empty" Vol fans.

I seen what Tyler did in real games last season when it mattered. Not to worried about his Spring game numbers. I do agree that Worley could be a stud oh!

Future looks bright on rocky top. Qb controversy only happens when the coach allows it. dooley seems too smart for that

Bray has the physical tools as we saw last year. The question is whether he has the maturity to put in the time necessary to take it to the next level ala Peyton. If he screws around and doesn't mature, he could be in for a rude awakening as Worley gets more time in the program.

Even with the time necessary and maturity he will never be Peyton.

look everyone is excited about woorley which i understand, but we have seen one spring game from him. Need I remind you that he was dropped ball away from a pick six. In a spring game defense doesnt get that complex. I think the kid will be good, but absolutely nowhere close to challenging bray..

One of which would have been a pick six to Melvin Goins.

What else are they going to say-he sucks?

Some people want him benched now, others throw out 5/30 as meaningless.

5/30 is 5/30, wind or no wind. It wasn't pretty. Should there be an open competition-probably not. But, I think some more pressure needs to be added to Bray on what he needs to do in order to get better. And the best defense he faced last year was UNC, and he threw 3 picks. On the other hand-the fact that Worley looked the part can only be seen as good, because if Bray struggles then at least there is someone there with talent to go in.

Spring games are meaningless in the big picture its a day for freshmen to play in front of a crowd

Kid's got talent but he made some bad reads and some 18 year old throws. With that said, he's young and probably should be in high school right now. This is TB's team for the next 2 years. Worley will get his chance in 2013 (assuming TB goes to NFL) to be the starter as a redshirt sophomore which gives him 2 to 3 years to break some records.

SPRING GAMES ARE MEANINGLESS. I can't believe that some second-rate reporter is getting his jollies by writing this trash. I guess deadlines are deadlines though. So Bray has a bad day. So what? I remember back in 1996 or 1997 (not sure which), Peyton, during the regular season, threw for only 177 yds or so against a miserable South Carolina team. Did everyone freak? No. I don't care how much experience Peyton had on what Bray relatively has at this point, but the kid has shown enough moxie and drive that I have no doubt he'll get it together and get the job done come fall.

2012 controversy?
I guess it depends on what Bray does in 2011.
My guess. He'll be fine.
The only place there will be a controversy in 2012 is on VN.

Even if Bray gets benched, Simms will be the one coming in. I say Worley will get the redshirt.

Spring games are meaningless, so 5-30 is nothing. If spring games were an indicator of anything, Toney Williams would have won a Heisman.
