Somehow the NFL has managed to exist even with media covering entire practices.

This isn’t about Heupel, it’s about college coaches in general.
Even with the recent changes, college football isn't the NFL. The NFL exists ONLY as entertainment. It has to turn a profit to exist. I can't remember how many but a fairly small fraction of College programs operate in the black.

It isn't about Heupel or coaches in general. It is about fans who believe they are entitled to have every itch scratched RIGHT NOW. You and I will find out who the starter is in about 2 weeks. That's plenty soon enough.

Every Power Conference football program operates in the black. Most FBS football programs do.

Also the quickest way to invalidate any argument you ever want to make about Tennessee athletics is to start pointing fingers at fans and label them as “entitled” for wanting to know what’s going on with the team or wanting the team to be good. The second fans no longer want to know who the starting quarterback is for their favorite team is the second the sport dies, and all the coaches can find out how they like selling insurance or coaching middle school gym class for a living instead of becoming multimillionaires as a result of the “entitlement” of fans.

Yep. You're one of "those". Congrats. Want to know and entitled to know are two different things. You've self identified.

As of 2019 which is the latest I could find without more effort than I wanted to put in... 25% of CFB programs are profitable. A lower % of athletic depts operate in the black. UT is definitely one of them.

I would bet you thought Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt’s only problem was “entitled” fans.

A lot of things have changed since 2019 too, lotta big TV deals throwing around unprecedented money. And sports teams at all levels have often deployed some creative accounting and bookkeeping for reasons.

The team likely knows who is performing the best. The best reason to announce earlier is if waiting will split your team between two guys that are close enough in performance to develop their own clique inside the team.

The expectation is that performance not drop off between #1 and #2. That's especially true at this juncture.

If I were in his shoes, I would tell the team when it was necessary to start tailoring the O and gameplan around one guy or the other. I would not announce it publicly until gameday if I could keep it quiet.
I would announce it now, unless the team already knows, if they already know I wouldn't announce until right before the game, or when you are required if any requirements

It amazes me still after almost 15 yrs on this board how we devolve in to antagonistic conversation so quickly. I get it, its a message board but their is a reason many of us take long breaks feom this board.
Most of us are adults so we should mature.
Eventually
A shot at bassilo fans, a shot at entitled fans, a shot at this poster or that one.
Geez guys, not everything has to be an argument.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good argument but sometimes we need to not press POST.
Just give an opinion on when we will find out, lol. Just passing time.

And you would be wrong... but keep on telling on yourself. You're doing a grand job with attempts at diversion.

Again, I don't fault you for wanting to know. You just came across as someone who thought you somehow had a "right" to know. You don't. And if I'm Heupel and can give myself an advantage over Syracuse then I would. The O isn't going to be the same regardless of who starts. Nico's decision making wasn't particularly great but his athleticism was. We're not really sure what any of the current QBs will give us when the lights come on.

How will they manage the O? Can they make the throws in this offense? Can they get on the same page with the choice routes? One of the biggest questions I want to see answered is if UT can get back to the hyperfast tempo like with Hooker. That comes down almost completely to what the QB can handle.

As much as I would like to know who the QB is... I'd much rather Syracuse not have the answers for questions like that.
