QB Competition: Bray and Simms

theres no way, he is too skinny, no way he stays that skinny getting the munchies all the time:)

Lol, There are plenty of skinny weed smokers though,,, Dave Chapelle openly admits to smoking weed and he is just as skinny as Bray and shorter ( I think). Bob Marley wasn't fat, actually I can think of a lot of fat weed smokers to be completely honest...

Although he did make some mistakes in the OW game, whetehr it be nerves or what, but it seemed to me that he could read a defense a little better than Bray. I dont think there will be many interceptions thrown by Simms and i think that will be a huge deciding factor in the starter.

Agreed, and reading defenses only comes with seeing them... You also have to think of the secondary qualities of both of these guys, several players have been quoted saying that Simms has really become a good leader and that means a lot in a game.

Players (especially OLine) will push themselves harder if they have faith in the leader they are protecting.

Great points guys. I am just curious, if you are pro-Simms-tarting guy, what are your thoughts about his time at Louisville and JUCO. Along with the OW game, I see them as red flags. Do they worry you at all? I think they are valid concerns, but maybe you can convince me otherwise.

Give him a break? Are you kidding me? If he smokes weed with regularity he will eventually fail a drug test. Fail 2-3 drug tests and the kid gets kicked out of school. Man, all that potential will sure do us good then. In my opinion if the kid is immature enough to risk his career on weed then he is not mature enough to be a starting QB in the SEC. Beyond that I want the QB of my team to be more of a role model than that...call me old fashioned. Do I think smoking weed is equal to some of the other stupid stuff our players have done? Not necessarily, but it is indicative of an attitude that leads to stupid stuff.

Before anyone says it, I know Simms had problems with weed in the past...but it seems to be just that...in the past...that's when I give someone a break.

If everyone who smoke weed failed their drug tests Tennessee couldn't field a football or basketball team.

Well stats arent everything. His arent awful, but theyre not good either.

Senior year in HS - 1,981 passing yards and 18 touchdowns.
Louisville - 2 gaems, 4/10 for 39 yards and 1 INT
JUCO - Started 10 games completing 159-of-269 (59.1 percent) passes for 2,204 yards with 17 touchdowns against only 12 interceptions

He put up almost 2,00 yards his senior year in HS and over 2,000 at JUCO. The kid can read a defense, and he can put the ball in receivers hands.

All 3 years he played in HS he put up over 6,000 yards and 60 TDs. Alot of that may be coaching. If CDD keeps going on and on about him, then maybe this is the right coaching fit for him. Alot can happen when a QB has comfort and confidence.

"only" twelve interceptions. I think that is lot. 1 int. for every 22 passes. On the other hand, I am sure there is worse out there. Still, I would like to know, are there any pro-simms-starting folks out there who are worried based on his past performance BUT still thinks he is the best option because of experience, mobility, leadership, etc.

Yeah I think its alot too, it was in there when i copied and pasted and forgot to take it out lol. His past concerns me, but like i said i think CJC will do good for him. He settled Crompton down, im sure he can do the same for Simms.

I hope you are right. Even though I think Bray would be best based on the information I have, there are obviously a ton of things the coaches know that I do not know. If they say it's Simms, then he will get my support 100%. However, based on the information I have available, I worry about 08Crompy syndrome.

Youre not alone. Mediocrity will do that to ones emotions.

We had a lot of discussion yesterday about this topic. Many believe Simms should play even if Bray is the better quarterback.

Whoever it is, should the best quarterback be our starter this year?

depends on how you define best.

stricitly by statistics?

Who understands the system the best?

Who has the leadership qualities the team believes in??

Which one breaks down the opposing defense best in the film room??

Which one responds to defensive sets the best in QB meetings?

How is Bray better than Simms at all those things?

I'm not sure what all you mean by best. See one might do a couple fo those items above better but not all the rest. Depending on that mix, coach will make a choice. (I'm certain there are other criteria as well that is a factor).

Coaches will not remember what happened in spring by next week, if they have not already forgotten it. Still a lot of snaps, meetings, film study and player / coach discussions to happen between now and 9/4 to determine who starts....

Look out for Nash Nance...who is given short notice on VN. He's gonna have a work ethic that will push the other guys. He's smart, he's dedicated, and he can also move better than the last several QB's the Vols have had. I think he will get to the point that he's good enough to start in the SEC at QB. Whether one of our other QBs shoots the lights out and becomes an all-SEC type keeping him as a backup...who knows? Nance will be good, though.

Hahaha. OMG dude seriously? WTF is your deal?

Bray could be the guy this year if he puts in the work. I believe in the long run, he could be more talented than Simms. However, by all accounts, this is Simms' team, and Bray has probably already lost the battle in the locker room. Don't underestimate the ability of players elevating their game when they believe in their QB. Bray will get his shot soon. But hopefully not too soon. Probably take a couple of Crompton-ish performances to bench Matty S.

I believe Simms was benched in his last JUCO game.

I don't know if that is exactly true, I know he was injured during the season maybe that's why he was benched...

If it was due to breaking team rules it would be out there already.

From everything I heard, Simms performed better during spring practice and was a leader even then. I will say it again, that Chris Walker was giving Simms a hard time after the OW game because Chris drafted most of the starting OL and DL while the other team drafted skill players.

Simms will be the starter and Bray needs to take it up a notch before he gets over taken by both Nance and Woorley. JMO

This way: Simms is the starter, until he isn't , whether by injury or radical non- performance. Then Tyler has to step up and do his best. If he's significantly better, he stays, UNTIL....

Simple as that!

The BEST quarterback is made up of many things....strength, accuracy and leadership

I think Simms will be the starter...he is the superior athlete at the moment and is a leader

This.

If Simms makes the TEAM better, he starts.

If Bray makes the TEAM better, he starts.

Doesn't matter who has the most talent / potential.
