Just a few years ago, 2 to be exact, I read multiple posts saying TN was so close and that a mature team would learn how to win the close ones.

So, now, today is a good example, this team loses two years ago. Loses the Fla and Ga games too. Why not be glad that Tn is good enough (again) that you can complain that the win margin wasn't enough???

Would you rather be 2013 Vols or 2016 Vols? No one wins every game by 50 and Ky really is better this year. Just my thoughts.....enjoy the win.

Kentucky isn't really that much better this year. They lose to freakin' Southern Miss.

Yes, enjoy being better than we used to be. Set your goal at just being better than the worst stretch in UT history. Reach for the stars and keep your feet on the ground.

Why is it bad for people to want more than average? If Butch hadn't kept this team in a constant state of disarray in every game, Tennessee would be in the hunt for a playoff spot.

You can't come on here with a positive post after a close win and expect anyone to agree with you. Most of us are glad we have another win but can see all the weaknesses and shortcomings, compare that to the better teams, and it is obvious we are still not there yet. I am however on your side, and from where I sit we are in a better place now and can get there with a few changes after this year. With all the serious injuries it is a wonder we can still compete. The defense as a whole looked horrible, except Barnett. Win the last 2, lose to Bama, win the bowl game = 10-4. Been a while since we won 10 and SEC East.

Still pissed about the USC loss and the fact we gave up 400 yards on the ground to KY says we are not very good.

I'm happy we won. But to say that was an awesome performance is silly. Kentucky, yes Kentucky, rushed for 443yds and threw for 192. 635yds total offense....to anyone, especially Kentucky, is not good. Again, I'll take the win, but I'm not happy with the overall performance.

How do you get better than average? Becoming better than you used to be.

Some of you guys remind me of the frog in boiling water. You don't realize we are becoming better and better, slowly. We are in position to see an overall improvement for the 4th straight year - every single year Jones has been here.

I don't have a problem with his post, but saying UK is "really better" is a huge stretch.

And just like every year Butch has been here, he loses a game that he shouldn't. If you think next year is going to be better with him losing so many players, you're dreaming.

I'm happy that Tennessee is better. But Butch will always hold them back from being more than they are every year with him.

He will always be over hyped. He will fade, as always.

Maybe, but it could be argued that next year's team will be more talented than this year.

You may eventually be right about Butch, but you are not yet. There is no way to know if we would have won any games we lost or lost any we won if the coaches were different. All we have are the facts and those point to improvement each year.

If we end with 10 wins this year and 11 next year, would you still feel the same way? What if we follow that with 12 wins in 2 years?

When counseling others to set goals one will use SMART.

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time Bound.

The team goal has always been to win the east this year and get better each game and year. All fall under SMART goal setting technique.

Setting goals that are unattainable will always lead to disappointment. Maybe some should reevaluate how they set goals in their personnel life.

OP, to the main question about either being the 2013 or 2016 Vols? I will take the 2016 Vols all day everyday. The 2013 Vols still had the quitter mentality that Dooley installed in his glorious tenure at Tennessee.

You're right. Way too much to ask of the best staff in America to beat a garbage USC team with what was basically a high school senior at QB..

Let's back down our expectations...

So you're saying if we finish the season 9-3 that's not good enough this year? Considering that it's better than last year I will take it. That's slow and steady progress.

Before somebody says it I realize 9-3 was not the expectation this season.

Good enough? No. This team was a playoff contender and Butch coached them to unranked. That's hardly progress. I'll be glad for the one game increase, but that's greatly offset by all the drama around the players leaving and the inexcusable loss to South Carolina.
