Eric Berry wants to become a dentist if this whole football thing doesn’t work out. Something tells me he won’t be holding a drill for awhile. The personable Berry talked about his internship as a dentist, his hit on Knowshon Moreno and a beautiful dream dinner party Tuesday after practice.
Q. Nick Saban said Monday that you were one of the best players in the SEC. Knowing he’s a defensive guy, what’s your reaction to that?
A. “Coming from a defensive guru like Coach Saban, I take that as a big compliment. I respect his opinion. To get mentioned like that, I don’t even know what to say.”
Q. I know you want to be a dentist if you can’t play football. Why a dentist?
A. “Because people will always need to get their teeth fixed. It’s not like everybody is going to walk around with bad teeth. You’ll get customers regardless. It’s also something that’s very interesting to do.”
Q. You’re not grossed out by that stuff?
A. “Nah. It can get pretty crazy. I saw some weird stuff when I did my internship. This one guy had to get a root canal, and it was actually infected with some bacteria. There was an abscess. The dentist I was interning with pulled the tooth and there was a sac full of pus.”
Q. I am so sorry I asked.
A. (Laughs) “It was pretty bad.”
Q. You’re friends with Reshad Jones at Georgia. Did you talk about your hit on Knowshon Moreno?
A. “No, because Reshad got the better of me on a punt return, and that’s what he wanted to talk about after the game. He got me pretty good. But (Florida safety) Major Wright called me and left a message saying that was a good hit on Knowshon.”
Q. Do you have a talent your teammates don’t know about?
A. “I bet they don’t know I’m real good at poetry. I still do it. I’ve really been doing it since I was little.”
Q. Which athlete impresses you enough that you would pay to see him play?
A. “I would have paid to see Sean Taylor. That’s my favorite player. He played the game like it was supposed to be played. He was always around the ball, always making plays, and you could see that a lot of teams respected him.”
Q. You must have been upset when he was shot and killed.
A. “I was extremely upset because I did look up to him. He dominated the college game. I didn’t know him on a personal level, but I had talked to him before. It was a true loss.”
Q. Which three people would you invite to your dream dinner party?
A. “I’d have to say Lauren London. You might have to look her up because she’s pretty bad. She’s the girl that played in the movie ‘ATL.’ I like her. Then I’d have to have Beyonce. Definitely need her. The last one would probably be Keyshia Cole.”
Q. Wow. Can I come over?
A. “Yeah, you can come too.” (Laughs)
