No one, including me (and I'm something of a Pollyanna), can deny anything negative you guys are saying about this season. 2016 has been a failure by any reasonable measure. We did not meet our expectations this season.
Just don't lose perspective...
I believe them to be sincere and agree with you that we have come a long way.
I just don't think you recover from this as a head coach, it really is that bad. Just look where Vandy has ranked the last 3 years in recruiting vs the VOLS. Even if you ignore the USCjr loss for a moment, the Vandy loss in and of itself is a fire able offense as it's unforgivable because it should not be allowed to happen. Butch simply cannot coach when the stakes are high and doesn't seem to be able to motivate his team when needed most.
Please consider this:
The Sugar Bowl payout is approximately $18 million; most bowls now considering the Vols pay about $2 million.
All things considered last night's loss was the worst and most expensive in Butch Jones career. I can no longer support him in any way. Just will not do it.
Peace to you. Sad, very sad time for VOL football.
I get it. I really do. We had HUGE opportunities this season to propel our program forward by leaps and bounds. We blew every one of them.
That's a reality.
It's also a reality that we're still moving forward. We're still improving. We working toward our goals. It's just going to take us a little longer to achieve them.
We'll know who Butch Jones is as a coach by how he responds to this season's failures. If he doesn't take stock and make adjustments, if he repeats the same mistakes and the same patterns and we get the same results next year... He's not our guy. If he gets back up, learns from what went wrong and makes a better effort next year... He might just be.
I'm not giving up on Tennessee.
2-2 against Vandy and 0-for against Muschamp is all the perspective I need. Butch is not the guy.
How is he 3-2 against Vandy in his fourth season.Be fair, Butch is 3-2 against Vandy. Not much better, but it's a more complete picture of his coaching, if that's what you're critiquing.
He's 1-1 against Franklin, and 2-1 against Mason.
He is also 0-3 against Muschamp's more talented Florida teams, and 0-1 against Muschamp's less talented SCAR team.
He's also 3-0 against Spurrier (name another UT coach that can say that). Totalling 3-1 against SCAR.
1-1 against Swamp Donkey (who just "doesn't lose to UT).
2-2 against UGA.
4-0 against mighty Kentucky (fans hyperventilate every year about their massive perceived improvement).
To look at it another way: against active coaches in the east, Butch is 100% against Kentucky, Mizzou, and UGA. He's 66% against Vandy, 50% against Florida, and 0% against SCAR. So, while all of those fan bases seem to be piling on to our situation, there is no team in the east besides SCAR with a coach with a winning record against Jones. Let that sink in.
Against those teams in total, Butch is 100% v Kentucky, 75% v. SCAR, 50% v UGA, Mizzou and Vandy, AND 25% v. Florida. Consider also that Butch ended multiple year losing streaks against SCAR, UGA, Missouri, and Florida (none of which he started)- you could argue that he inherited a losing streak against Vandy too.
I just keep running this statistic through my head...
2-2 vs Vandebilt. I've seen all I need to see.
"What should be done eventually must be done immediately ."
It's the reason he won't be fired. We've taken steps forward in each of his first three years, but a step back this year.
Set backs happen, but he'll need to pull a rabbit out of a hat next year to prove he's up for the job
Well, then what are the options?
