Putting a face with a screen name

Well, if he is being truthful about having asperger's, let's not be so quick to be angered by his comments. I have a son with asperger's and he doesn't really express his thoughts in a very positive PR manner.

No shat. My oldest has aspergers. We joke with him that he has *******rs syndrome because social cues are not his thing. He really has to work at it.

My son has it too. He also has a hard time expressing himself in a way that doesn't piss everyone off.

I don't have aspergers, and I have a hard enough time expressing myself without pissing everyone off. Often times, I can't understand why people have taken things the wrong way. So I commend anyone who has aspergers efforts to communicate in a acceptable manner. But at the same time, I honestly don't mind people using it as an excuse for their blunt communication. After all, it is a pretty darn good excuse.

saw this on my phone this morning and figured I'd post. My son's first visit to Neyland so we had to get a pic in the checkerboards

then I apologize. I didn't mean it like that.

Some of that may be my asperger's, just one more reason on my laundry list why I shouldn't procreate.

I have an Aspy kid. Thumbs up to you for your insight.

And fwiw, I happen to like Aspy people. No reason to stay in the deck chairs and avoid the gene pool. (As long as you know what you'll be in for, which you obviously do.)

Interesting the number of posters here who have kids with Asperger's, which is hereditary. I have a lot of Aspy traits myself, and I see them magnified in my son.

For those with Asperger syndrome, it's almost painful to engage face-to-face with others. You can't imagine how difficult it is to carry on a simple conversation, keeping track of the facial cues and tones of voice and body language, and trying to figure out what they all mean, and then how you're supposed to react in return, and finally guessing what the other person really thinks of you, and what are you supposed to do about THAT? Just establishing eye contact and maintaining it is exhausting. Online forums are way more comfortable. Is this perhaps why so many of us parents of Aspies are here?

Even online, the blunt speaking typical of Aspies can get them in trouble, as we have seen. You have to realize that people with Asperger syndrome have an almost impossible challenge in understanding how their words and actions appear to other people, and so they live pretty much permanently foot-in-mouth. They don't intend to hurt others' feelings, and they aren't cold to others' reactions; they just genuinely don't perceive or understand them. It's like living all your life in another country, and never ever figuring other people out, no matter how desperately you try.

Just something for those who have been offended by comments to consider. Peace, y'all. :peace2:

this is my son Spencer, diagnosed as mildly autistic at Vandy when he was 2. He skiied from the top of the mountain in Steamboat Springs and all the way down on his 3rd day. He's also been doing bjj for 2.5 years and is an A student headed to Brentwood HS next year. What a gift God gave to me. Sweatest heart in the world. I used to be concerned that the ways of the world would get to him. He is wired differently and I'm a little jealous at times, to be honest.
