I would never have fired pearl to hire Martin. But now that pearl has fired himself, you need to come to grips with the idea that he's gone forever. Pretend he's like your favorite dog that died or something if that'll help you - or get therapy. He's gone forever.
Once you finally get your head around that concept, you will eventually see that though keeping Martin is not ideal, right now it's the best thing for the program. In future years, he will either develop or not and it will be reasonable to act.
But - get this through your head - this is not a choice between Martin and pearl, it never has been, and it never will be.
