Put the gun down...

I've seen this sentiment expressed many times in the last day, and while I understand the feelings behind it, I also don't know how it's supposed to be a comfort.

If the idea is that Tennessee fans should be comforted knowing UT was playing a much more talented team ... well ... those rankings in the screenshot suggest UT isn't catching up. So now what? If UT's current recruiting is a "Vtech Sh*tbox," then what? Tennessee has done pretty well but it hasn't caught up to the top programs in recruiting. Is UT always gonna be the program coming in with less talent looking for a puncher's chance to upset the big programs? Because that's not a comfort. That's just disheartening. The big money dogs like Texas and Ohio State are not going anywhere. They are going to continue to spend money.

Also, I'm not cool with calling the current team a "Vtech Sh*tbox" but I understand the purpose of the analogy.
There is relevance to stars en mass, and using them as probabilities for each player is one thing, but draft day shows actualities have over a hundred 4-5 stars get passed by 3 stars. Early bloomers that max out get passed by late bloomers who work hard on a different physical timetable.

Edited to add, NEVER an athlete, but entered my SR year at 5’7 and attained 6’3” by sophomore year in college. My 4.5 20 speed and 4” vertical interfered with my pro prospects.

Yet, if the field goal had been made, Heupel would be a genius right now. It's really part of nature for a coach to pull back on the reins a little to try and protect a lead as time runs down. If he had been aggressive and there was a pick six, he would have been just as much a goat.
IMO there's a difference in good clock management and just running up the gut three times to place the ball for the kicker.

Instead of trying to score a TD they totally settled for a FG and it bit their @sses

I think we're going to be okay. Please stop kicking your dogs and beating your wives. We almost beat a Porche in a Vtech Sh*tbox.
The idea of “we shouldn’t beat them because they recruit better” needs to go away. We likely will never have the recruiting classes they do while Kirby is still there. So we should just never expect to win? Garbage. I can take an L when the other team simply is better than us. They weren’t last Saturday. Coaching gave it away. The fulmer 3 runs up the gut after the fumble and the botched FG sequence. All after our offense had come back to life and looked great.

Let the kids win the game. It’s why they’re there. Instead we chose to let the coach lose the game. I’m sure those kids were heart broken. And rightfully so. Heup showed 0 confidence in his team down the stretch to put it away and it cost them. I really do appreciate being back to relevance, but I’m also convinced Heup is our Richt.

I felt bad for our defense. Worked their butts off forcing field goals on 2 possessions inside the 5 yard line, then recovered the fumble all for nothing. As a Vols fan I felt bad, but really felt bad for those players who should have won and very will could have if we don't set on the ball and try to run out the clock
