This is the ONLY area I had a problem with Saturday. JH let one bounce that cost us some yards. He also fair caught one with nobody close (he has done that a few times this year). He had an ok average to start the year but with him playing defense is it a matter of him being tired or has he been instructed to do this. Are there other options for returner? I keep hearing how the coaches rave about Rogan's kick return abilities. Thoughts?

I'll say this, the reason he fair caught that one was because UT had the block on. The majority of the time there would have been guys screaming downfield right in his face as the ball got there.

Not excusing the fair catch (he should be able to tell that no one is near him) but that is what they are taught to do when the punt block is on.

The options for returner: Austin Rogers and Dennis Rogan.

Rogan has been a great returner in practice, but he's undersized and a freshman, which means CPF would rather have all his teeth pulled simultaneously than play him.

Rogers is nothing more than a fair catch machine.

We need some dynamics back there. It's going to be important going down the stretch. This team needs every edge it can get.

Dynamic punt returners are great, but first and foremost I want a guy back there who will field everything he can and secure the football.

exactly. I view yards on punt returns almost as a bonus. If you don't force turnovers and get us pinned deep i'm fine w/ returns. Stand on the ten and if it goes over your head, so be it. Otherwise try and get it and see what happens. I can't stand to see someone catch it at the two only to make it to the 8.

so i guess we should just put 11 on the line and go for the block and forget about returns?

I think there's a chance you see Vinson there next year, once he's healthy. No way we can put him back there with his injury right now.

kickoff and punt returns may not be the best place right now, but I'm saying this in this thread:

I just want to see Gerald Jones on the field somewhere doing something.....

that is all

I believe his pride was the only thing that got hurt! Later on the sidelines he looked fine lifting that gatorade jug up!

It's an injury that he came to college with..he can play through it, but will have to have surgery after the season. I imagine that it's not the best idea to put him through that much pain and being on the receiving end of hits when he's not healthy.

Hefney is 94th in NCAA stats in punt returns. In kick off returns Coker is 18th, not too bad.

Id like to see either Creer or Berry back recieving punts. Lord knows Hefney is really stinking up the field when he is on it.

I'd rather let Gerald Jones or Kenny O'Neal receive some punts. Actually, first I would let Dennis Rogan get a shot, then those two.

I was frustrated by that but I had people around me say that at that point in the ballgame he was probably told to just catch the ball so nothing stupid could happen (i.e., turnover)

Wonder if Les Miles would have told him that if he was in CPF place?

They mentioned punt returns on the radio being the only area where the special teams have not improved. Everyone is pointing at the great play of Hefney.

Here are some VERY good possibilites of returning punts

1) Gerald Jones

2) Dennis Rogan

3) Kenny O'Neil

4) Denarius Moore

5) Brent Vinson

6) Eric Berry

7) Lennon Creer

8) Lamarcus Coker

9) Art Evans

10) Lucas Taylor

Now, im sure that you guys would rather have a lot of those guys returning kicks than Heffney or Austin Rogers!
i mean, cmon Phil.. Put your playmakers on the Punt Returns.. Urban Meyer started that James PR last year and he was a freshman.. and look how good he is at it now.. the same with that PR from Georgia.. and Tedd Ginn JR!
but seriously, there is no reason that Phil cant get at least one of those guys on the list who can qualify as a good Punt returner!
