Pump the brakes.

It's all part of the process. Expected win total increases by 1 game for every month we get closer to September.

In February, people are all like "we'll be luicky to win 6 games next season" and by mid-August, you'll see 10-2 and 11-1 type predictions. And then the first time we lose, we'll be back to 4-8 and 5-7 type predictions.

That is what posters on this board are trained to do. The attitude has changer among the football team and coaches. There are talented young players who know if they work hard in the weight room and practice with intensity, they will win a lot of football game this Fall and in the future. Happy days will be soon be here again

Every time I hear or read "pump the brakes," it makes me think of summer days, sitting in sweltering heat behind the wheel of my old man's car parked in our driveway, pumping the brakes repeatedly to get air bubbles out of the lines after he's done changing a drum or something. That'll give your leg a workout, esp. if the old fella had a few beers before starting the project. Heh.

Never really heard it called "pumping" brakes when, you know, you're driving in snow or on wet roads in the days before ABS. That was usually called tapping them. You know, "tap the brakes repeatedly, allowing time between each tap for the tires to regain traction."

Of course, anyone born after about 1990 (so anyone still in the teens or twenties, more or less) has never learned to pump (tap) their brakes at all. ABS took that phrase right out of our lexicon.

So those younger folks, they have absolutely no clue what the hell this thread is about.

Heh. :)

Pump those brakes, boy, keep pumping.

TJunky, your distinction is well taken. However, to those who are consistently advising others to “pump the brakes,” in opposition to unbridled optimism, I can only repeat the commandments bequeathed by that ultimate authority on all things pertaining to Tennessee football:

“Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.

If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up...put on more steam.

Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.”

Go Big Orange and, as always, lay waste to the infidels.

You pump the breaks. We finally have a Qb with some pocket presents. He was the escape goat last year, and a pre-madonna the year before that. We have fallen by the waist side for too long. Been a tough road to hold. For all intensive purposes we should be better. I just hope nobody puts our team on a pedal stool.

Pump the brakes was also used to describe cadence braking.
Pumping the brakes allowed you to maintain full steering control while slowing in order to avoid an obstacle or obstruction in the road.
Where full braking often came at the cost of steering control. The need also obviously lessened with abs.
We're old.

We snuck up and beat 2 ranked sec teams last year. We ain't sneaking anymore. We lost our d line but have added several good pieces that are, well, freshmen. We are years away from the quality depth it takes to compete for a full season in the sec. We have a very good, recently improved staff but they all will tell you coaching is only as good as who you are coaching. Its depressing to have been witnessing this happen over the last ten or so years. I, like many Vol fans are and have been in show me something to reinvigorate a passive interest in something I have loved for decades. Show me damit. I ain't got **** to spout off about and haven't for years!

I think a lot of you missed the point. 😂😂😂

Who cares about the point? We've been hearing this way too long, and most are sick of it. The expectations are high, and should be. And when they aren't met, fans are either gonna go ballistic and blast players and/or coaches, or they are gonna make excuses for them. Just how it is.
