I have family members that are cops and I still can't stand cops. I don't drink, never have, but I hate them. It seems that they think they are Gods and we must bow down to them and kiss their arses. Most of them were the kids that got made fun of in High School and now that they have a gun and badge they think their powerful. Also don't ever just let them search your vehicle make them get a search warrant and waste their time, they hate it when you tell them no.

The strip is notorious for underage drinking and kids getting out of control. The crackdown is to deter these activities, if a good time requires one to be hammered, rude and obnoxious, time to find a new past time.

The OP is correct- KPD is arresting tons of students on the strip and in the fort this year. I know of several students who were actually arrested inside of their house in Ft. Sanders. It is so ridiculous that many students are choosing to drive home from the bars rather than walk, because the walkers are the ones who are being picked up. For parents who have preached to their college aged kids to never drink and drive, this is hard to deal with. KPD appears to be much more concerned with student drinking than with robberies and muggings.

On Long Island you actually have to earn an Associates Degree to become a cop.

I was on the strip after the Uga game and I didnt see any cops busting people. Then again I was drunk with alcohol and victory.

Seriously though, I didnt see anything going down, people seemed to be just as drunk and crazy(dumb) as you'd expect after a big win.

my one and only trip in the paddy wagon was well deserved, although at the time i was was convinced it wasn't.

the basic rule of thumb is you can get away with whatever you want, as long as you're not drawing attention to yourself.

it should also be noted that the KPD announced shortly after the season last year that they would be cracking down on drinking during game weekends in the Strip area. that alone should put everybody on high alert.

When they picked me up for PO, they threw me into the paddy wagon with all sorts of characters. We were all handcuffed behind our backs and still managed to get a cigarette going. A father and son duo was sitting beside me DRUNK AS SKUNKS. They got busted for DUI and it was his father's birthday. They ran into a ditch right on the strip in front of a cop. They were still in there partying. Somehow a couple of Mexicans also got picked up but no one could figure out why. They did not speak English whatsoever. One of the two starts whooping and hollering and beating his head on the van to get them to stop and talk to us. He physically starts crying and we are all confused why. Maybe he is a rookie and not ever been arrested before some thought. I was thinking it may have to do with Immigration. But no! He was holding his pee for 20 minutes. He could not take it anymore and finally his bladder burst right there in the van. We all were avoiding the trickle on the floorboard as well as we could. When the KPD finally got us to the "big house" and opened the door, the first two officers were in for a suprise on their shoes. They saw nothing funny about this as we did, and for my laughing hysterically I got rough up.

When they finally let you bail out and go to court in a week or so, all of it is dropped for 300 bucks. Big time buzzkill on a wonderful gameday in Knox town.

I can also agree that the cops here in Knoxville have gotten out of control. I witnessed 2 kids at a fraternity house get written up, and they were dead sober guarding the front door of the house. It is sad to see how far downhill UT has gone, party wise. 2 years ago and before that, you could walk through the fort and there were house parties everywhere, people out and about. The stories I have heard from people just 3 years older than me really makes me jealous. Now the fort is damn near vacant on the weekends, people have to cram inside houses because cops will 100% come if they see people on a porch.

Walking on the strip past 12 or 1, especially if you have had a few drinks, is a one way ticket to jail. I have since discovered that it is much safer parking your car behind the bars on the fort side, and then driving home. I have yet to even pass a cop driving on the way. I know drunk driving is bad, but so what if I hit a few hobos on the way home?

Go downtown or the old city if you want to avoid the ahole cops. Cabs are always down there, the bars are better, the girls are hotter, the music is definitely better, and there's not the constant threat of either randomly getting in a fight or being arrested. Plus you don't have to hear Journey or Mellancamp or Dave Mathews Band over and over again because some drunk prick filled the jukebox with money. There's only so many times "Don't Stop Believing" should be played consecutively!

I was driving down through the Strip on a game day about 10 years ago and was stopped in traffic when a beer bottle came flying down from one of those restaurant balconies and smashed on the hood of my car. Obviously, I wasn't expecting that and it nearly scared "it" out of me.

After I settled down, I got mad about it. Then I finally decided, what can you do about it? Now I just try to avoid that scene on gameday.

The idiot police in Knoxville can't even direct traffic. If they would just move out of the way and let the lights do the work it would flow more adequetly than when they take over. It's a joke really. Not only that, it is flat-out uncomfortable around the strip on gameday. They ALL act like they are ITCHING to get to take somebody down. That's a fact. Just watch them. It's really pretty weird.

back in the day, you wouldn't see cops anywhere on the strip during the day, and at night, you might see a couple here or there... if they want to make a difference, put them on bicycles and have them ride back in the fort to keep people from getting mugged going back to their cars.....

This has been going on for at least two years... this was a pretty big topic of discussion in my public writing course after one of my classmates was arrested by a group of cops waiting outside Cool Beans looking for P.I. arrests.

I've been followed, while on foot, by police in a car just because I was walking at night.
I understand there are crime issues around campus and on the strip, but when the UTPD goes out of their way to lose the trust of the student population it only makes things worse and causes students to fear reporting anything suspicious for fear of being arrested... particularly if they have had a beer or two.

It got to the point where I was just buying a six pack and bringing it back to my dorm in a backpack during the summer I was forced to live on campus. Amusingly enough, I used to play beer pong/beirut in an empty dorm room with several football players and the admin looked the other way.

I moved off campus just so, as a 28 year old student, I could have a drink without having to worry about missing a test because I got thrown in jail.

With the down economy, the KPD needs a lot more revenue---cracking down on people coming out of bars for PI is easy money!!!

I can do you one better. I am one and dont like most of them either. There are a few good ones who are in it for the right reasons but mostly your talking about rookies and when I say rookies 5 years and under.

I never did like writting tickets, 3 in 15 years, guess thats obivious. however I never got picked on in school and half the time my gunbelt hangs on my passenger seat.

In Georgia, to be prosecuted for a Public Intox, the officer must see some outward manifestations of drunkeness. i.e, cussing, stumbling drunk, obnoxious behavior etc...

You cannot be arrested for a Public Intox for just being drunk and walking, as long as you do it like a normal sober person would be doing it. If the police on campus really are doing what many of you are saying they are doing, then everyone needs to lawyer up and beat the citation.

but just so you know, I wouldnt lose my house or the things I have worked for because I gave a "break" to junior who was drunk walking down the street and got run over by a soccer mom just because junior's mom and dad said if I was doing my job their son would still be alive. There are a lot of legal liabilities most people dont realize. if mcd's can get sued and lose over serving hot coffee, think of the ramifications law enforcement has on it.
