Ps5 reveal

Graphics-wise I wasn't blown away, but a lot of that is due to how good games already look. Diminishing returns is kicking in. That said, it looked like the SSD was in full effect in the Ratchet and Clank gameplay with entirely new worlds loading instantly. Cool feature. You could also tell that in the Kena gameplay that the LOD has definitely increased. I think that will be the biggest graphical upgrade (in addition to ray-tracing) this generation. There will be virtually no pop-in and distant objects will look much much better than they currently do. I was playing AC: Odyssey last night at max settings on PC and distant objects are still super ugly, so there's a ton of room for improvement there.

As for the games themselves, Demon's Souls Remake was the highlight for me. Resident Evil 8 also looks awesome. I think Sony showed too many indie-esque games and it kinda cheapened the presentation a bit. I doubt I will buy this day one or even year one to be honest, as it looks like most of the big hitters are still far off. Could change with announcements as we get closer to launch, though.

I also thought there were too many indie-looking games. And some other reveals were too short to get much from them.

Tons to unpack. Lots of different art styles, which is good. We'll see what some of those games end up looking like. If nothing else we've got plenty to talk about now.

Day one for me. Rachel and Clank looked amazing.

Edit....day 1 as long as it isn't over 500

God bless, some of you are hard to please I guess. I mean, it was a very large, diverse, well balanced lineup that had something for everyone. If you can't be impressed with that showcase, I'm not sure what you're looking for. Are you mad they didn't show the latest Call of Duty or Madden?

For me there was a lot of stuff here that either I loved or at least interested me like...

Ratchet and Clank
Demons Souls
Hitman 3
RE8 Village
Returnal
Kena
Project Athia
Horizon Zero Dawn 2
Spiderman: Miles Morales
Gran Turismo 7

I was disappointed that a Socom wasn't announced as part of the launch. There was a lot of hype that Guerilla Games was developing a new Socom to compete with Call of Duty/RB6: Siege. Would've made PS5 an insta-buy for me on release. Even so, do like the games that were announced, and the design. I think I will likely wait a few months to see what the consensus is on which console is better.

I'm not mad at anything. You liked it. Great for you.

- Very little gameplay vs. in-engine
- Games showcased were nothing that moves the needle for me
- Sparse details about the actual console and controller
- No mention of release date or price

I'm not sure what the point of this 'Reveal' was.

Well, not all of us are diehard Sony fanboys who think they can do no wrong. Many people seem to agree that it was a pretty underwhelming showcase, especially after being so hyped by gaming journalists.

And what a cheapshot criticism of people who didn't like it or weren't bowed over by the presentation. Yes, we only hold differing opinions because we are ADHD-addled kids who only play AAA mainstream titles. You nailed it!

Exactly. Not all of us gamers are waiting with bated breath to see if the' Reveal' will include in-engine footage of 'Knack: Ultimate Edition'.

I was really wanting this to be informative. Additionally, I wanted to know about:

Is there a HD size difference between the Disc-based version and the Digital-only version?
Can you lay it flat?
What was the framerate of the actual sparse gameplay that was shown?
What ports are on the back of the console?

Maybe in the not-so-distant-future these details will be released.

Oddworld looked cool. I like those games.

Most of the games shown will be playable on most anything. Leading the show off with a PS4 game that's been around for 7 years and an expansion pack for a PS4 game may not have been the best approach.

Ratchet and Clank looked cool but I thought that new ssd technology was going to do away with loading screens.

SOCOM 2 was my game back in the day on the PS2. Got all the way up to top 1k in the world. Loved playing that game with friends.

I'm glad they showed off indie games, there's some damn good indie games out there that deserve more exposure. But I will agree, some were cut too short and it was hard to get a feel for them.

I think Horizon 2 was the best looking game graphics wise, it screamed next gen to me. Ratchet and Clank was super impressive with the particles and the instant loading gimmick. They literally made that feature to show off how fast things can load. Lol

Games I'm looking forward to are Demons Souls and Resident Evil 8.

I think this is a good video showcasing the differences between a top-notch PS4 game and a launch PS5 game (Horizon games):

On land they look comparable but underwater the PS5 version looks outrageously good. That will be the big difference this generation IMO. For the most part games will look similar, just significantly more polished and with more beautiful effects/lighting/shadows in certain areas than we're used to seeing.

They're were several games I'm excited about. Some of the indie stuff was really interesting and I can't wait to see more on them. From what I've seen so far from Microsoft and Sony, I don't think we're going to get many converts in either direction. It's seems like PlayStation and Xbox gamers value different things.

I don't know. I've always been a PS gamer. Just not this time, maybe. But maybe.

Just the opposite here. I'm about as console agnostic as you can get. Been gaming since the 8 bit era. I've never bought my main console from the same company 2 generations in a row. Right now it's looking like I may with the ps5. Unless Microsoft has some unique, high quality software up it's sleeve that they're not showing that is. We'll see what the next two years brings. Never buy a console at launch.

Speaking of launch, what do you think the launch price will be? I've read everything from $400-$700.

I apologize if my post came off so snarky. I was probably just caught up in my excitement after watching the event. And you couldn't be more wrong in thinking that I think Sony does no wrong. The PlayStation is my preferred platform and I can be pretty passionate about it but believe me I give them PLENTY of **** for things they do or don't do. After thinking on the event for a while, here's my list of pros and cons...

Pros:

1. I thought the overall presentation was really good! To be limited by COVID-19, I was very impressed by how professional and high quality the production of the whole event was. Major props to Sony for not making it feel cheap and thrown together (unlike the Inside Xbox event).

2. Sony showed a very diverse, well-balanced lineup of games. There was something shown for everyone...almost (I'll get to that in a minute). I was especially pleased at how many family-friendly games there were. As a father of two, this was nice to see! Also, even the so called indies looked beautiful and had high production quality. That "Kena" game looked amazing! It was like a Pixar film and that was designed by a small indie studio! Little Devil Inside was another one I found was very impressive!

3. I like how Sony kept emphasizing the new PlayStation Studios logo before each game reveal. It already does a great job of associating quality games with that logo. Kind of how Naughty Dog's logo invokes the same feeling of quality. Same with the "sacred symbols" that Sony kept emphasizing between each game trailer. Sony always does a great job of hammering those symbols home in the minds of gamers.

4. I like how Sony laid out the entire family of PS5 products for us to see with the console, the remote, the headphones, the camera, etc and how stylistically it all clearly goes together. The only thing now missing is VR 2.0 which I'm sure we'll see in a year or two.

5. I'm SO glad Sony is launching an all digital PS5 model from the get go! Since I already have a stand alone UHD player and I went all digital this gen already, this is a no-brainer to me!

Cons:

1. For as robust and diverse the games lineup was, there was a glaring lack of multiplayer-focused games. I was hoping Sony would address this better going into next gen. A SOCOM, Killzone, or even teasing The Last of Us 2 Factions would've gone a long way in better representing multiplayer gaming. However it seems as if Sony is going to continue to rely heavily on 3rd party partnerships to do a lot of the heavy lifting in that department. Speaking of...

2. I found it interesting/concerning that franchises such as Call of Duty, Destiny, Battlefield, Overwatch, Fortnite, etc were nowhere to be found in this presentation. Aren't some or most of these IP's partnered with Sony on marketing? Is it possible that Sony is losing some of these partnerships back to MS and thats why we didn't see them?

3. No Silent Hill or Batman! I thought it was all but guaranteed that those would be there. I was very disappointed that they were no shows.

4. No date, price, or pre order detail. I didn't really expect this but it was still disappointing. I'm so ready to pre-order this damn thing!

5. Not necessarily a con, but I'm honestly not sure how I feel about the console design. I'm still wrestling with it. It's so far removed from what I imagined it would look like, which I KIND OF like and at the same time I kind of don't. When it's vertical, I think it looks ok. Kind of a tuxedo with a popped collar or something. But laying sideways it just looks strange. I definitely like the all digital model more, as it's perfectly symmetrical. Whereas the standard model looks awkward with the slight "beer gut" to account for the 4K drive. Seeing the two models side by side, the all digital model looks like the intended design, where the standard model looks like the drive was thrown in as an afterthought.
