PS4K is codenamed "Neo." Supposed specs for PS4K leaked along with original PS4 spec comparison...

A new report has revealed the apparent specs for the PlayStation 4.5, aka PS4K, aka the PlayStation 'NEO'.

According to GiantBomb's sources, the upgraded version of the PlayStation 4 - rumored since March - is referenced internally as NEO, and will contain a a higher clock speed, improved GPU, and higher memory bandwidth. The console will also support 4K image output.

The publication reports that from October, games released for the PlayStation 4 must ship with a 'Base Mode' for the current model and a 'NEO Mode' for the upgraded model, while games released previous to October can opt to take advantage of the new hardware with a patch. In a nutshell, games running in NEO mode will offer higher visual fidelity and a more stable frame rate - the exact specs provided to GiantBomb are below:

Original PS4 CPU - 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz

NEO CPU - 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz

Original PS4 GPU - AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz

NEO GPU - Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz

Original PS4 Memory - 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s

NEO Memory - 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s

The documents obtained by the publication suggest that Sony has no intention of splitting its user base with the NEO, and both consoles will share the same store and interface. There will also be no NEO-only games, nor will NEO users be offered any exclusive unlockables or gameplay options...aside from running a superior version of the game, that is.

Last month, it was reported that Sony's new console will "be announced before the planned October release of the PlayStation VR." The information obtained by GiantBomb offers no finite elaboration on this, stating that devs will be "allowed to launch NEO-ready games before the NEO itself releases".

From Eurogamer:

Several sources have indicated to me that PlayStation Neo launches this year, despite its E3 no-show. If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilise its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out.

Lets see if true.

It won't be able to do pure 4K for gaming. It will do 4K up scaling for gaming and 4K UHD movie playback. Neo is more like a PS4 Slim with slight performance upgrade, not a next Gen console like Scorpio.

Yup, they are one step away from joining Blockbuster, the Dodo, and John Gotti

I liked them better when they were Electronics Boutique. The people who worked there then seemed more professional. They certainly dressed more professional. Plus they used to have a nice balance of games, PC components, productivity software, etc. Now it looks like a General store that sales a hodgepodge of everything. All that's missing is a jar of Slim Jims at the counter.

I went in there the other to pick up a used BF4 and it took me forever to check out because the bastard wouldn't stfu trying to upsale me for an hour

Everybody knows they're on a clock. They know it. We know it. The only thing that's saving them right now is the used market and the fact that the console providers need them to push hardware. However the all digital future IS coming sooner or later. Maybe not in the next 5-10 years but it's inevitable. Right now they're throwing whatever **** they can at the wall and seeing what sticks. They've even started getting into publishing.
