Kelly’s not a program builder...never was. Took over a well run program at Oregon and had Scott Frost and Mark Helfrich among others to bring in the talent. His offense had no answer in the Pac 12 and that splashed up his rep until he faced legit programs in the postseason. When he started losing recruiters, he went the Willie Myles route and that got the program in trouble. He decided to take his talents to the pros and they exposed him. His scheme can churn up a heap of yards and points, but he’s uninterested in the other important duties of head coaching. We needed grief counseling to handle our recent 4 win season and Pruitt got major flak for only netting 5 in his debut. Kelly just strung consecutive 4 win stinkers and has the 31st ranked recruiting class. He picked his assistants and it’s pretty telling that he can’t sway decently ranked alpha male athletes to UCLA!
And Helfrich was such a great head coach for the Ducks that he ended up getting fired. Even Oregon fans will tell you how much better of a coach Chip was than Helfrich. And Chip did have two winning seasons as a head coach in the NFL. Being a head coach in the NFL is not for everyone though. Spurrier, Saban, and Petrino are perfect examples.
