Pruitt's big decision.. (he needs to think out of box)

"I like Pruitt and he will get the job done if we will give him enough time. " Substitute Dooley or Butch and UT fans have heard that statement many times over the last years. I would like to offer, "I hope Pruitt can get the job done because this fan base really deserves a much better football team to watch and cheer for and we hope Pruitt is the one to get us there." You are right on Helton though, I do not understand plays that we see work well one game and they disappear. After using Chandler on down field passing out of the back field with great success. I just haven't seen him targeted like that lately. It's the inconsistency that I don't understand. Between that and all five running backs must get a carry every game it makes me wonder about the OC.

I'm shocked! We made it almost an entire first season before putting our new coach on the semi-hot seat (at least with vn). That's so Tennessee. If I remember correctly, it was said before the year making a bowl game would be a huge accomplishment for this team. We have one more game left and maybe we'll just pull it off. The prognosticators were right. We just need to give this staff a couple more years to see what kind of progress they can make.

It may have been said by some but certainly not all of us were going to be wowed by making a bowl game while getting embarrassed multiple times during the season.

Not sure if this has been said.. but I like to find out the connections of why people are hired, etc..

My biggest fear is that Pruitt doesn't have enough solid connections with Offensive minded people. He's jumped around too many times.

Helton was the QB coach throughout 4 years when Friend was the OL (2007-2010). Also during this time, Neil Callaway was their Head Coach and Kim Helton (father of Helton) was the OC. After Callaway got fired Tyson stayed on but moved from QB to RB coach. Who was the OC/QB coach that took his place? Jeff Brohm. Who was the Head Coach? Garrick McGee who's now an "offensive analyst" for MIzzou... Tyson took a brief stint Cincy but Re-United with Brohm as OC at Western Kentucky. Neil Callaway ALSO joined them as OL coach.

Regarding Callaway, he was the OL Coach with Tyson 4 straight years but combined all years working together it has been 9 years. Guess who might be looking for another job? You guessed it.

Will Friend and Tyson only worked together during the UAB times and didn't re-unite until now. Their Offensive philosophies may have definitely changed. Will friend took an immediate SEC route while Helton took the non-power house to west coast path.

Pruitt only worked with Will Friend for 1 year at Georgia but I still believed he asked him to be OC first. After Georgia, he was the OC at CSU and did well for awhile.

Now back to my thread title. If Pruitt makes a change in the offense, does he stick with Tyson and add Calaway? Or does he kick out Tyson and promote Friend to OC/OL? I actually hope none of them and brings in a brand new OC who's never met but has a solid track record.
Oh boy! another “ We need different offensive coaches thread”
We don’t! We need players.

I don't know whether we need new O coaches. I suspect that if things are not a lot better next year in recruiting and on the field, CJP will enter 2020 on a very warm, maybe even mildly hot, seat. Probably easier to attract top assistants from a position of strength than to wait until your back is against the wall.

Ok, does Todd Helton pull Tyson to his new gig? If so, we should go after Matt Canada, assuming he moves on from Maryland.

We realize there are idiots on here that think you can take a 0-8 in the SEC that is at a talent deficiency at nearly every position on the field and go 5-3 the next year,
So no we didn’t think they would be wowed

But apparently you "non-idiots" were certain we would get humiliated multiple times and were as happy as a puppy with two peckers about it.

Right.

But maybe low standards fit you and your "non-idiot" friends and that is why you're able to see how much we've improved between the 40-14 humbling and the 50-17 shellacking.

I'd prefer to be an idiot than to lay claim to that line of thinking. But that's just me...

Who’s happy? Nobody likes losing but , yeah being not surprised when the score actually correlate’s to the talent of the teams on the field some weeks and we get shellacked and we don’t have a meltdown doesn’t mean we have low standards.
And your “high standards “ have nothing to do with your inability to see improvement from several players and the team overall, even though the consistent team improvement will only come with a higher talent level at several positions!

Whatever you need to tell yourself.

But Mizoo isn't 33 points more talented that us. Not in anyone's world.

I like your response. I think people can tolerate those that want to voice their displeasure. I think the line gets crossed when you go ahead and judge the staff in year 1. I didn't do that with Dooley and not with Butch. Ok to note it as a possible trend but don't call it a trend until you have more data crossing multiple years.

Yes but momentum can make the final score look worse. I said it before on this forum and multiple liked my response, that intercept before the half took its toll on the team. It was the opposite of previous week vs Kentucky.

We played the last 3 Quarters with #2 QB that contributed 14, a fumble by a RB. Etc,etc.
For you that can’t see beyond the final score,
2-3 mistakes by a 14 point lesser team can turn into a 35 point blowout .

"We just need to give this staff a couple more years to see what kind of progress they can make."

Their were people still saying this about Butch and Dooley. The fan base has seen enough bad coaching over the last 8 years to know a turd when they see it.
Right and each got their shot w/their best teams 2012 and 2016. Both in 3rd/4th season. Pruitt has the keys until he has his 1st senior/junior groups. If that 2016 roster has Pruitt coaching we would win the East. I've loved some of the things I've seen in his coaching style. This has been a huge upgrade over 2017 and trending the right direction. This feels a lot better than this time last year. GBO.

I think Pruitt is fed up with Helton, this quote from Saturday night is telling

Pruitt: When they have more guys in there than we can block, we don't need to be running it in there. Which we did a lot.
But all the experts say it's all we can do. That and this could be taken out of context. Maybe he means we needed to audible

This Helton person you speak of....

Is this the same Helton whose scheme was considered excellent, even brilliant by some, after the Auburn and Kentucky games?
Nothing genius about it. Defense held KY, which was a 1 man army and for once, we were lucky against Auburn. We converted every 3rd down pretty much when auburn knew it was coming. Not a brilliant scheme. Was pretty damn stupid, but it managed to work. Our strength is the pass game, yet we try to run through a wall. Play calling is horrible on offense.

Tough call right now. Arguments on both sides I think have merit. Believe we can all see the OL needs an infusion of bodies and talent. QB, under the new scheme, has improved but isn't going to enter the heisman watch anytime soon. The defense's front 7 also has a ways to go. So coaches are working at a disadvantage.

Flip it around and you have a non-SEC OC, who seems hell bent to run up the middle. You get a good game here (Auburn) but not there (Missouri). That sort of tells me he in not consistent in putting a game plan together. The offense as called, can't seem to score in the mid to high 20s on its own merit (it needs help). Those last two have to change, period! I'm not seeing that yet.

But, with reservations and hope, let's stay the course for now.

He does need a better OC than Helton and a better line coach than Friend. Too much pay for too little result. You can base it on SEC results or a cherry pick games. I can't believe they watched Missouri film and that was their best game plan.
This...Hard to argue with the results. We get out - schemed way too often for me to think Helton is the answer. Need an upgrade after this season or Pruitt will be diggin his own grave in a couple of years
