Pruitt to Bama?

I remember when people were worried Dooley was going to skip town in the middle of the night for Georgia.

And let’s not forget Butch to Michigan.

Geez.

Guys, what if Dooley jumps to UGA?

Guys, what if Butch leaves for Michigan or Notre Dame?

Not worried. Nick Saban will coach til he's 90.

I think this is going to be the case. They asked Willie Nelson about 10 years ago when he was going to retire. He said "all I do is play golf and sing, what else am I going to do?". Enough said.

I talked to Finebaum about Pruitt possibly heading back to Bama after Saban retires.

What are your thoughts?

They will get the best coach available at the time regardless of cost. They learned the lesson we are still working on. If that happens to be Pruitt then he is gone, simple as that. What coach, when offered the highest salary on a team with the best roster, would not take the job?

Well, that didn't take long. He's won two SEC games. If he were to leave, that would mean Bama sees him as top shelf, and he would have put UT back into upper crust...in which case, we'd be much more desirable. That being said, pay him, and we'd probably not lose him. Rule #1 is you don't follow a legend...Bear Bryant, Bob Neyland, Pat Summit, etc, etc. Rule #2: Don't call Finebaum to ask his opinions. I remember when folks were worried that Butch would bolt to midwest school...that was a good one.

He would have to leap frog Dabo and others before that. Year 1 of his coaching career. Bama doesn't pick from that tree now!

Not going to happen. Too many powerful Tide boosters are apparently against Pruitt returning because he left to coach a hated rival. There was an article last spring reporting as such. Some feller named Dabo is their guy.
That will change if he starts beating Alabama regularly..

I’m going to go with Wes Rucker’s take in that if the time comes that Bama wants Pruitt it means we have done something right and he’s brought TN to an elite level.

If that happens we’d have quite a few options.

However, that’s a huge if. For one, following Saban is essentially a thankless job. You’ll constantly be compared to him and any achievements less than absolute perfection would be deemed fireable.

For another, it will still be considered Saban’s team and you would constantly be in his shadow.

What’s better? Going to Bama to constantly live under the shoe of a giant? Or building your own team to elite status so you are regarded as the football god of the program?

I know which one I’d choose.

But again, this is something we shouldn’t even be thinking about.

Whoever follows Saban will have expectations that can never be met. Will be the worst job in college football when it becomes available.

Agreed. The next Bama coach will be the next Holly. You can’t follow a legend, even if they had great results, any loss would be a loss that Saban wouldn’t have had. Any season without a natty will be a failure. Pressure would be through the roof.

Personally I'd be a'ight with Bama getting Pruitt 4 or 5 years from now. That's not a knock on Pruitt at all, but that would mean Tennessee was in a good enough spot that Bama wanted our coach. Also if someone stealing our coach we wouldn't be on the hook for the buyouts to get rid of somebody and wouldn't that be nice for a change? So in all I hope Pruitt does well enough to where others are wanting him, that's a sign of success. If Bama wants him that's a sign of greatness and I'm okay with being in that position even if we have to get another coach down the road to continue it.
