Pruitt SEC Coach of the Year

Complete lack of progress? Were you watching the same Spring game I was?

Our defensive line is significantly bigger and faster than they were last year. Our linebackers are significantly bigger and faster and actually know what they are doing and our OL (which btw is getting even more people to include a kid that will probably start as a Freshman) did a pretty decent job at protecting JG. Yes they had some break downs but overall they were significantly better.

By fall we are getting Brandon Kennedy back and I suspect Trey Smith. Just getting Smith back would be huge. Kid has a different motor and will be playing the guard position which is his most natural and most dominant. (Won’t have trouble running behind him at guard)

I was rewatching the spring game and as it went on the O line did not look like a disaster. Additionally, there was a defensive player in a no contact jersey which was kind of dumb. He was basically let through at least once close to JG. Very hard to judge the O line with those circumstances.

Wasn’t a big fan of black jerseys on defensive players. However, them just getting to line up and sort of go through the motions in game like conditions helps them so it is understandable.

Offensive line takes time develop and luckily they have time. They have been challenged. Let see if they put in the time over the summer to get bigger and to master the playbook/situational football. If they do they will be clicking by Florida week.

Lots of optimism displayed concerning 8 or 9 wins. I personally do not see it at this point. Perhaps the product we put on the field early this season will get me there with some of you. But we have to start winning against the Vandy's and Mizzou's consistently before we start thinking we're going to take USCe and UGA.

Buddy Ryan one of my favorite former NFL coaches on taking over his new job as HC of the NFL's Philly Eagles was asked about his All Pro RB, Wilbert Montgomery being a great player and how he was doing at training camp. Buddy's comment went along the lines of, "He can't block, catch a pass, or run the ball effectively, other than that, he's a great football player."

My assessment of the 2019 Vols is based on what I saw on the field last year and somewhat this spring with a nod in respect to Buddy Ryan. "The 2018 Vols, couldn't run the ball, couldn't effectively pass the ball, couldn't effectively stop the run, nor could they effectively stop the pass most of the time and did not win enough games to attend a bowl game, other than that we should expect the 2019 Vols to be world beaters."

Tennessee will beat both Vanderbilt and Missouri. I think Vanderbilt goes 4-8 and 0-8 in the SEC while a 2019 NCAA probation Missouri team goes 5-7 and 3-5 in the SEC

Glad to see the Vols getting settled at 8-4 in mid April. By June we should be bumping against a likely 9-3. And by completion of Fall Camp we should be flirting heavily with 10-2. Looks like another fabulous off season everyone.

Debbie Downers and Bob Bummers not happy unless everyone on Volnation says Tennessee will have a losing record in 2019:rolleyes:

Dude, can't you tell I'm jacked @ this? Tired of 5-7. We are in serious improvement mode and could be on the fringe of playoff talk by September. We're winning the offseason again, and I'm dang proud of it.

I don't think even 9 wins would net a coach COY honors, much less 8.

Remember, this program is only two years removed from our last 9 win season. In fact, from back-to-back 9-win seasons. A significant number of players on our roster were part of at least one of those 9-win seasons. We love talking about how bare the cupboard is, but getting to 9 wins doesn't take 85 potential Heisman winners.

Sure, it would be great progress to get to 9 this year. Would be wonderful. But no one is going to win CoY for it. Simply won't happen.

Remember COY is given pre-bowls. So 9 wins would be 9-3, compared to those 8-4 teams.

To be fair, UK was 9-3 and Stoops won it.

To be honest, I'm not sure I want a UT coach getting the same level of pity. That said, a +4 in regular season wins YoY would be amazing. Which is why it won't happen to us.

Just stats - since 2011, the fewest regular season wins for a CoY was Stoops at 9. All others had 10+.

Ain't happenin.

who is going to beat Tennessee besides the big three(and all games will be close)? BYU? Missouri? No chance. We will not lose again to Vandy, Mizzou, USC, for a long time. BYU has no shot at Neyland, No shot. No shot. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some players on that team and even coaches who are actually afraid to play at Neyland.

lolwut? You must be new to the Vols.

Agreed, coupled with the fact our D May be better than most here think. They moved up 35 and 70 spots in terms of total defense and run defense in year one. If we can put up 31-35 points we can win some games

That was because we slowed tempo significantly. Using tempo-adjusted stats, we barely improved at all overall, but youre right we improved quite a bit on run D. Too bad we lost the entire dline though...

It would actually be an insult to the program if he did win it at 8 or 9, Stoops won it at 9 in large part in recognition of how difficult it is to win at Kentucky. Is this a narrative we want taking hold at UT?

Key word here in bold. Remember when Dormady went 10 for 10 or Preston Williams caught a 50 yard bomb as a freshman in spring games?

By July 2018 TN was a lock for 9-3, including no-problem cruises past WV and the entire month of November. Pre-season COY sounds about right for a start.

"Dont you know WV is small and we will run all over their puny b12 trash defense? We are SEC..."

had to SMH so many times last fall

Everybody worrying about whether Pruitt can get COY while I am over hear wondering how many times JG gets rocked this year with the sieve-like offensive line he has to play behind......
