Pruitt just self inflicted a QB controversy

I know it was mop up duty to an extent but Shrout looked good, made good throws, seemed in command, pulled the ball down and picked up yard with his legs when he needed to and delivered us two touchdowns to boot, he's gotta get the start next week with Bailey ready to come in if this was a fluke.

Pruitt was letting Shrout audition for a new team ; he will be in the Portal soon.

I think it's still a winnable style if you have the players. Clemson and AL are great football teams that have evolved offensively but they possess all the tools you have to have, and to top it off, their 2 RBs, QBs, OLs and DLs are the best in the country. You're never going to get to that level without the players regardless of who is coaching. I think Pruitt can get this roster to an SEC upper tier level, we're not there yet but not as far as it looks. We desperately need some playmakers, I think we've got some on the way, just got to hold it together somehow I feel. A loss Saturday would likely give me pause though.
It’s not a winnable strategy. Even Saban came out and stated it. It’s a passing game now. Stop trying to defend Pruitt. He has failed and should be a dead man walking. The recruiting is going to suffer with the on the field performance. Pruitt made his bed with his inability to make the right decision in the Qb sooner. Now we can expect some of our best roster players to hit the transfer portal in January and February. The program is doomed if we don’t make a coaching change soon.

Some of you guys kill me. You bitch and moan because JG plays and you ask for ANYONE else to play. Then when JG doesn't play you bitch and moan because everyone else got to play.
If you watched the game you could tell Pruitt used the game to judge the QB's in live-action. That was why he went for 2 on Shrout's first score. We were not going to win and it was one more offensive play versus just kicking an extra point. Shrout deserves a chance to play. With the poor QB play we have had this year, Pruitt should have made the change a long time ago. It didn't hurt Bailey to come out of the game. He is not that fragile.

Being down by 24 is why we went for 2.

boy, JT Shrout got some haters!

the only controversy even worth discussing is JT Shrout vs Harrison Bailey. Anyone else at the position could transfer and we'd be beyond fine!

Not so much are there Shrout haters (yet) but HB has a core group of worshipers...and has had them before playing a significant amount.

Shrout's physical abilitles appear to be ahead of the rest. Not so sure about his game management skills. Last season he was an interception waiting to happen. However, with proper coaching he could be pretty good. Of course, JG suffers from the same fate. Good physical tools....poor coaching/poor game management...

Just noticed the total passing stats. JG is toast at Tennessee

Shrout was unexpectedly (to me, anyway) effective in the game, I was pleased at his arm strength when he went downfield (when he was allowed to). Needs a lot of work, as does every UT QB not named JG.

Speaking of The QB Who Must Not Be Named, dont be so sure. Hes been called 'toast' so many times, he should own a Waffle House....yet there he is again, taking snaps. In this case I'll believe it when I DONT see it. Ever again.

The sad thing is Guarantano has played most of the season and both Bailey and Shrout look better than he has all season. We could've given either one more of a chance early but didn't. I think Shrout is a little more advanced right now because he has been here a while. Need to see both QB's a little more to determine who we should be starting.

Pruitt will be here for a 4th year if he rolls with Bailey or JT the rest of the way and we build some momentum going into next year where it’s possible we have folks return due to free year.

Outside of Trey Smith, I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t return if we take a step forward on offense over next two weeks and defense also takes a step. Defense prolly played the best second half from a score and 3rd down perspective in over a month. Nothing to brag about but our defense surprised a bit in second half.

2 years in a row this happened. Bad Qb management.

That's what this all comes down to. Are either of those 2 QBs really appreciably worse talented than Kyle Trask? Trask was horrible against us last year. Look at what the FL coaching staff has done with him since. How have any of UT's QBs improved in the past 12 mos? I get it that this blame ultimately falls on the head coach's shoulders but at the very least this falls on Chaney and Weinke. They should be fired and this should be thrown in their face as to reason #1. They have talent to work with yet this is still what we've got and that's unacceptable

I disagree that you cannot create a gameplan that would be effective for all three. Their styles are similar if not exact. Geez!

Lol: Maurers skittishness vs. Arkansas was a result of a gameplan for JG? That’s absurd. The basics are the same for whatever offensive gameplan you have.

You can't properly prepare 3 guys for a football game. There just aren't enough reps in practice to do so. You can prepare one and you can prepare a couple gadget plays for another but that's about it. The fact that it's after Thanksgiving and we still have a 3 headed monster at QB is a sign of failed coaching. And I'm being kind by not including Mauer...

How do you figure they’re ANYTHING alike? Bailey needs quick hitters from a clean pocket in the SEC. I think that much was easy to see. His deep ball is lacking, his arm strength is lacking.

Maurer is able to use designed runs and roll out pass plays as well as staying in the pocket

Shrout needs intermediate to deep passing plays to be at his best. Check downs are not his NOR Maurers strength.

I disagree on Shrout. He threw some real nice passes to his RBs yesterday. I can't speak to his football IQ

The defense played fairly well but they did give up a boatload of passing yards. I have one major complaint: Why didn't they blitz more? I got tired of seeing 3 and 4 man rushes against a QB who really doesn't possess a run threat. I think the defense should have had some exotic zone blitzes in the game plan for this game. W/o those you're relying on penalties and dropped passes to end drives. If we'd pressured him into a couple picks we'd have had a chance.

I only say that about JT because two different staffs kept him low on the depth chart and the reasoning has been consistent. Couple that with his HS stats and the fact that he only started one year and it’s easy to believe that the problem with him is mental. That being said I could be dead wrong because let’s face it..... I think it’s obvious we’ve been lied to for a long time about the qb position.

Why is he using a game in December to judge QBs in live action? Shouldn't that have been done a long time ago? What other Power 5 team is still judging QBs right now? That's poor coaching

It's probably not fair to compare Bailey and Shrout yesterday but my vision from my man cave showed a deer in the headlights from HB and a very confident "let's go attack 'em" JT Shrout.

You’re not wrong. I’ll add to it from my end. I seen a game manager(Bailey) vs a gunslinger(Shrout). I seen a weaker arm and slow release from Bailey and a stronger arm with the same accuracy from JT and BM as well. I know BM only threw one pass but that’s all I needed to see concerning arm strength and compare to what we seen from Bailey. The upside to Bailey was how well he got through his progression. That’s where I see separation. Other than that, I’m sorry but I found myself underwhelmed at what you’d expect from a 5*.

Well if they are not ready to be judged until December it would be stupid to determine what their abilities are any earlier. I know you don't want to hear this but, the honest truth is Covid has held Bailey up. I don't think for one minute that our QB coach can develop talent or Shrout would have been ready last year. I think Pruitt is in over his head but EVERYTHING is not his fault. If he doesn't make coaching changes after the season then it is his fault and will cost him his job. Fulmer is giving Pruitt a free pass this year.

Let's not consider for even a minute that HB is Pruitt's starter moving forward. With the game out of hand, he gave Shrout some time as the backup. Maybe, just maybe, Maurer ran a few plays just to give Florida a different look. No, let's assume it's all a big conspiracy. Most got what they wanted with JG out for the game even though he was available, yet when JP didn't handle it exactly like they wanted, he must be sabotaging the program and creating chaos. Where do I get one of those tin foil hats and one of those VN honorary coaching certificates?

I'm OK with keeping Pruitt if he makes changes on his coaching staff, namely Chaney and Weinke...As for Covid, why is that an excuse in Knoxville and not Tallahassee?
