Pruitt just said offensive coordinators are overrated

It makes sense. The players are the ones executing, they need to be good. The OC, not so much (to an extent obviously, like not lining up in the shotgun at the 1/2 yard line on 4th down).

You seriously can't be this dense. Not sure how many more ways that someone can explain it to you. In no way was he saying that the OC is not important. He was simply inferring that on "some" teams the OC is overrated because of talent or a lack thereof. Like Alabama, they have enough talent that a blind monkey could be successful as The OC. Hence the "overrated" inference. Take that blind monkey and put him on a team with less talent and he may suck. Hence why recruiting is more important today.
Everyone understands what he was trying to say.

The hardest thing for casual fan to accept is that his teams players just aren't good enough. People always think you can scheme your way to victory as if it's a video game.

That's true. And casual fans (as opposed to you I'd assume) can't understand how Vanderbilt and South Carolina have players that are so much better than our when every recruiting service in America believes otherwise.

Pruitt downplaying the OC search/(lack of) a hire. And he knows a large portion of the fanbase will defend his stupidity. Dude could say having a quarterback is overrated andba portion of the fanbase would marvel at his brilliance and how far advanced he is amoung head coaches.

UGA stepped back after he left and Kirby took over in year 1. FSU’s defense was abysmal in first year of playoff when he was gone. That was evident in playoff vs Oregon. Bama’s defense isn’t the same solid D they had under Pruitt.

Or you could say that he outcoached Auburn and Kentucky with less talent and Coached them to their talent level against USCe and Vanderbilt. I guess you could say it any way you want.

I really would like to agree with you but then we'd both wrong. I can't see any sense in that.

You missed the whole point. He was trying to keep the focus on the day not the OC. He said on "some" of these teams the OC is overrated because of talent or lack thereof. He's saying that it doesn't matter how good the OC is if you don't have the players. Hence recruiting being more important right now.

Perfectly understand what he's saying, not complicated. Trying to keep it on recruiting - that has been proven false by him delving into talk of Fitz. Only when it got to oc that he began to deflect.

All he reallyy had to say is something like it's being worked on, but let's keep the focus on these new commits yada yada. Instead he says this.

LOL I know! Damn him for thinking the fan base has enough common sense to understand his point! Not sure what he was thinking. He probably should have said it really slow and emphasized the nuance more clearly. Your right he probably isn't ready to be a Head Coach.

You can’t be serious. Even if what he said has some truth to it you don’t say it in front of reporters. As a head coach at a major university you can’t always say what comes to your mind, there has to be a filter. Yes, it makes you look ill prepared and part of being a head coach means you have to deal with the media.

I'm floored that someone in the thread posted that you can't scheme your way to wins. My god, why even have a coach?

"Now, all your staff has to do anymore is recruit. Let robo-coordinator 2000 take care of the rest! He will randomly select 1 of 65,000 highly improbable, and yet effective, plays! Just sit back and watch him work!"

:fans look down the field and cheer:

"wow what a play! Thanks robo-coordinator 2000! We love you!"

2018 preseason and season in stages:

"The OC hire will be critical for Pruitt, being a defensive coach and all"

"$1.2m for an OC? Must be a good one! After all, it's Pruitt's butt on the line, ergo he must have made the optimal hire!"

"We can't score with run-run-pass, cmon!"

"Helton sucks!"

"Hope he gets fired"

"He got fired"

"Hope we get a home run OC. Critical hire!"

Pruitt: "OC don't matta! God said Jimmies and Joes, not Xs and Os!!"

"Yeah, OCs are totally irrelevant"

This whole fiasco is Pruitts shower discipline/sideline trash can moment.

No doubt that will be laughed about on Volnation about 2 years from now when all of these current Pruitt apologizers talk about how crappy of a coach he was.

No idea how I'm some sort of elitist for pointing out the obvious. I'm sure I've done it too. It's just the way fans think... sort of like always thinking the backup QB is the answer; we play better as the underdog; the announcers hate us; the refs are against us; the coach is stupid, etc, etc.

So was he not referring to the players with that statment? Maybe thing will change when we recruit better cheerleaders or something+ no, wait...he did say players. So he made a statement about the team as a whole and yeah, thats a pretty pathetic thing for a coach to do.
Don't worry, I get that to some any criticism of the great Jeremy Pruitt is about like walking into a Baptist Church and claiming that Jesus Christ isnt real.
You’re goofy! 🤣

Imagine what can happen if we have good players AND a good OC. Maybe we'd be a good team for once
Until the first 3 and out...then coaching search. 😕

I think he knows his options. He goes and hired the hot name and in 2-3 years they leave and he’s back to square one, looking for another OC. If he goes and hires an up and comer, certain fans will go ape shot and be calling for his head.
I think he’s trying to find a good solid pro style OC that has been around enough to not have that HC ambition. But finding that guy means leaving the hot names on the table and possibly looking to the NFL, and by looking to the NFL he has to find someone that either is about to lose their job or look for a position coach that is willing to step down to the college level to step up in title.

"The offensive coordinator sometimes is overrated." These are stupid words to escape the mouth of any head coach at a press conference when asked about his search for an offensive coordinator. Should Pruitt be fired for it? No, and I haven't seen anyone say that he should be. Nonetheless, it is a very dumb thing to say, I am sure he knew it as soon as he said it, but he kept a good poker face. That's trial lawyer 101, if you say something stupid or if a witness says something bad, you keep a poker face on and keep going. It's also trial lawyer/public relations 101 that you don't waste time arguing and thus expending your credibility trying to convince people of something they are likely never to be convinced of anyway, e.g., the sun does not rise in the east, the sky is not blue, or that saying "the offensive coordinator sometimes is overrated" is a whole lot different than "offensive coordinators are overrated". However that is precisely what has been happening the last 5-6 pages or so. I don't know what would be so hard, if you were inclined to defend the statement, or why it would make you a bad Vol fan to say: YES, I THINK PRUITT CHOSE HIS WORDS POORLY HERE, THIS IS WHAT I THINK HE WAS TRYING TO SAY: That's a lot better than just berating everyone who disagrees with you.

Then maybe he should demote himself back down to DC. Looks like being the head coach is a little too stressful for him.

I don’t believe I’d be anxious to go to work for a very “ green “ boss (someone with no experience in his own position) who has so little respect for the position he wants me to take.
