Pruitt is a terrible hire and here is why

It's not that he's that bad of a hire, I suppose I just don't trust any hc that comes here anymore. Our revolving coaching door is more like a merry-go-round of sub-par horses.

It's not like we have a choice at this point anyways. I'll support him until he gives us a reason not to.

I am waiting to see which way D4H leans, then I will take the opposing viewpoint. Chances are I will be right then.

If he's a great coach we will know by year one. Maybe not by number of wins but the obvious signs of progress.

Right. I'm on the fence with the hire, but willing to be patient on wins. Year one I want to see us be competitive in most every game and best the teams we should

I want to see willingness to change to fit our guys and not being stubborn by failing to adapt or make changes when the plan isnt working. Like a read option w no runs from the qb or stuff like that.

Butch frustrated everyone w the stubborness of his offensive scheme.

Im more worried that this in your face press coverage pruitt is talking about is not possible w current players. It wont take long for him to see if they get burned over the top repeatedly. Will he make changes to his gameplan or be stubborn?

Maybe with better coaching they wont get beat over the top... wait and see bro. We have plenty of time to bash later. For now lets have something to celebrate. No where to go but up 😎

There are probably that many or more who are predicting that 90s-level success is just a couple of seasons away. Nobody knows. We may have the next Kirby/UGA situation. We may have the next Muschamp/UF situation.

We may get there, we may not...
Who would not want the 90s level mark? Fulmer included.
CJP may not be either Kirby or Muschamp.

Defense wins Championships! Winning in the Trench

This staff has got a good start to do that. Appears CJP is throwing the kitchen sink at the Offense.

We don't know, but CJP has surrounded himself with a decent staff.

Player Development much improved and hopefully depth.

Recruiting to his and his staff's vision/needs will determine the timeline to get there.

Can't judge yes or no. But OP throw a little temper tantrum about wanting Vanilla and got Chocolate.

Every point that was made fell into the category to early to tell....

I thought we were gonna get a guy with deep ties to TN. Circle the wagons and be led by people deeply invested in this state and this program. I heard a VFL staff way more than once. I would prefer our admin just say “we can’t get a big time coach at this school now.” Just stop telling us what you think we want to hear and tell the truth. We got an absolute Alabama guy. He is a Bama lifer. And maybe that’s a good thing. Idk. Just wasn’t what I thought we were doing. No clue if he will succeed or not . Just like no one else knows, because there is no HC data to go on.

Not sure the admin ever told you anything. Put down the phone, back away from VN.

Go talk to Haslam about it...I am sure you both are disappointed.....

Never been accused of being a sunshiner, probably lean more to the negavol type.

But Pruitt deserves our support for now. He might succeed past all our expectations. You never know. I thought Dabo at Clemson was a bum, but now fans would kill to have him as their HC.

We judge a coach's work by the team's performance on the field. Let's don't prejudge Coach Pruitt until he has had a chance to change the current state we have found ourselves in. When you've lost to Vanderbilt 4 or the last 6 years, when you finish the year as the only conference team without a win, a complete change in the culture was needed. Could be CJP was just the man needed. You don't need to buy in, just give it a chance now that it's done.

Now let's delete the thread and move forward. Aight?

Yes,exactly. Pruitt has been a winner everywhere he has been. The fact that Saban hired him is enough for me. I also like the fact that he is defense oriented. ****,TN has turned into a marshmallow on defense. We need this turned around.
He might not turn out to be a good head coach, who knows. At least he's not Dooley, who had a losing record as a head coach BEFORE he was hired, and Botch Jones, who was one of the few that Dooley beat.

Man you got 20 percent that would be unhappy if GOD took over the team, just looking for something to moan and groan about, nobody knows what kind of coach he will be but i am willing to give him a chance we could have done alot worse than JP, he is full of energy bringing in very good coaches that are very good recruiter got a feeling we will close strong in recruiting but that won't be enough for those 20 percent of so called VOL FANS.:eek:hmy:

20 years from now when he retires as the old ball coach, the thread sh!tters will be a distant memory.

My favorite part is where OP cites his horrible defenses in the national championship games, pointing out that FSU team game up a shocking 31 points while Kirby never gave up more than 21 in a national championship. Funny how he ignored when Kirby’s Bama team played that same Auburn team 2 games prior and gave up 28 points.

Hey wait a second, when did Kirby leave to take the UGA job? Oh, it was after the 2015 National Championship game? Against the same Clemson team that Pruitt gave up 35 points against? That can’t be right because OP said Kirby never gave up more than 21 in a National Championship game and that 2015 Clemson team scored 40 on Bama.

Let's stop and face reality. Fulmer was totally misguided with his defensive stubbornness. The SEC has 6 teams ranked in the top 25 in scoring defense. So if we lucky we might join a group of 6 with great defenses. With all brand new inexperienced offensive people, where do we go? The only way to return to greatness would be with an offensive juggernaut which the SEC lacks. The SEC needs an Oklahoma and unfortunately Phil Fulmer left that train at the station because of grudges against the guy whose job he took and the guy who took his.

You do not win in the SEC having to score 35-40 points a game. Great defense is what wins in this league. For reference see our offensive output vs the defensive output in Dooleys last year.
BTW, you still washing fat Donnies car for him?

OP is insane lol. Pruitt's resume impresses me more than Smart's. 3 different big programs with natty rings from 2. Guy started at the bottom to where he is now. You can't do that if you're not good with people, intelligent and a dang good football coach. He's a winner go eat a chicken dinner man.

The search was embarrassing. But after researching the guy, he has been around football his entire life. He is a football guy. I do wish he would hire someone to keep his twitter account active though. His last tweet was in May and , of course it was a Bama tweet. Needs to get some Big Orange stuff on there pretty soon. But all in all I think we got a decent guy and a good football coach. Maybe accidentally, but either way we got one.

I know battered vol syndrome is a real thing and people here just want to feel positive about whatever they get at this point, but I don't feel that we've benefitted in any way by ignoring logic and facts over the years, so I figured I would point out why other schools weren't interested in Pruitt and why it won't work out here.

Let's tackle the "virtues" posters will reiterate ad nauseam:

1. "He's a great recruiter!"

Well, he has traditionally been at schools that have great recruiting. Has he really been the impetus behind it, or just part of a team?

Also, weren't we told the exact same about Dooley? Didn't Dooley come from a similar recruiting background?

Also, does it really matter so much that your head coach was a great recruiter as an assistant? If that were the case, wouldn't other Power 5 schools immediately go for the best recruiting assistants for their head jobs? Or are we just smarter than the rest of them? Does anyone actually believe that?

Haven't we gone down this road again and again? How many top recruits have we singed over the years that weren't properly developed or utilized? Haven't we learned, at this point, that a coach is much more valuable than a recruiter?

2. "He's just like Kirby Smart!"

Actually, looking at the differences between the two resumes is enlightening. Smart was Saban's defensive coordinator for 8 years. Pruitt has only been a defensive coordinator for 5 years total. He has only been Saban's coordinator for 2 years. So, we are certainly looking at less experience.

In fact, one looks at Pruitt's time as a coordinator, and the fact that he has never been at a school for more than 2 years, and you realize that he has very little experience developing personnel. This is a guy you want to rebuild with? By contrast, Kirby Smart was Saban's top assistant as he built the Alabama dynasty. That's far different than being a hired gun that is inserted into already established staffs and programs.

Do you really believe that every Alabama defensive coordinator will make an effective head coach just because Smart has done well this year? That doesn't seem like a good bet. We've seen plenty of successful coordinators fail over the years, guys with more consistent resumes and longer periods of production.

3. "He's a great defensive mind!"

Is he? He has had very good defenses. He's also always had a talent advantage.

The thing I don't understand about Tennessee is that, while the administrations' mouthpieces in the local media keep telling us how hard it is to recruit and win here against the likes of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, etc…we never really try to hire a coach with a history of getting more out of less. Pruitt definitely continues that trend.

If you believe that he will be able to out-recruit the rest of the SEC, then I guess there is cause for hope. But hasn't that been what we've pinned our hopes on in coach after coach? Why would we think the result will be different this time?

One of the best measures of a coach is what they do in the big games and against teams of similar talent. Since Pruitt has never been the head guy, we have to go by his coordinator experience. In his biggest games (his two national championship appearances) Pruitt's defense has given up an average of 33 points (by contrast, Kirby Smart's defenses never allowed more than 21 points in the national championship game, and averaged 11.7 points allowed per NC game). That's not really the work of a defensive mastermind, especially considering the incredible talent he had at his disposal.

4. "We couldn't get anyone else!"

Well, that may be true. If so, though, that is due to the administration not the fans or the program. Accepting that result and supporting that administration does nothing to improve the state of the program. Haven't we learned anything at this point? Isn't "getting behind the new coach" and having patience the exact reason Dooley and Jones got big extensions, resulting in ridiculous buyouts?

If you truly couldn't get anyone who had a decent chance of winning here due to our administrative mess, wouldn't it be wiser to install an interim until we fixed the mess? Committing longterm to a weak hire simply doesn't make sense for anyone, save those hoping to continue bilking the fans while selling false hope. Sure, an interim would probably kill the recruiting class. But is it better to waste 1 year or 3-4 years?

5. "We got to give him a chance! He hasn't coached a game yet!"

Yes, we're back to that familiar point where the unknowable future is our new coach's best quality. Of course, no one can say for certain that Pruitt will fail, but given that there is so little evidence that he will succeed, it's a sucker's bet to think he'll ever be anything more than average here.

Sounds like you had your heart set on Kirby smart. If you don't like and cant support our new coach, best thing for you to do is don't watch.

Dont worry, if he fails beyond year 3, all of us, Negas and Pumpers, will jump on him like flying monkeys on a scarecrow.

if some of ya'll can't look at the staff he's putting together, and be willing to get behind this, then just stay gone. jeez.

no one knows if he's going to be good or bad at this point, but we're barely 2 days in to his tenure, and y'all are willing to write him off already...sight unseen? some of you are either manufacturing reasons to hate, or just being stubborn because he is a bammer.

both are stupid. David Cutcliffe was a bammer. Doug Dickey a gator. Pat Dye a bulldog and Vince Dooley a tiger. so you just need to get over it. and you should credit phil for not doing the comfortable thing and make an "easy" hire.

we weren't cheap, and we were turned down by at leaast 10 candidates. some said no to $6m+/year. we've got nearly $9m invested in this current staff, with more to go.

so you can at least take some solace in the fact that they're serious about winnning, and no better way to show that than for phil fulmer be willing to raid nick saban's staff to make TN great again.

i think if CJP can keep the portions of hes very aggressive personality that have been problems in the past in check (and i think Fulmer can help with that), then there's a good chance in 3 years we're singing a different tune.

long story short, i don't think it will take this staff 6 years to build "championship caliber depth". and i think when it's 4th and goal in a big game that can be seen as a signature win....you'll see the difference.

if you don't want to get behind this staff, fine, i'm not gonna argue with you. but if this ging goes the way some of us think it can.....just remember how you felt this weekend.

and if he sucks out loud, and this staff a bust, then we'll just get to do this all over again. so knowing that, what's the point in bemoaning this hire, considering what he's done, where's he's been and the staff that's currently being put together?

GBO.
